Hi. I have a lot of mpeg files with a bad aspect ratio that im wanting to fix. With google i found a few programs for sale that claim to be able to change the aspect ratio but i wanted to know if there are any for free that can do that. Are there any programs similar to WMV Aspect Ratio Changer or MPEG4 Modifier or MKV Merge that works on mpeg/mpg files? Thanks.

What are your source files (post mediainfo) and how were they captured?
Why do you think they have aspect ratio problems? With what player?

First the problem needs to be defined before a solution can be suggested. The intended player should also be defined. Some respect header aspect ratio flags, others only work with square pixels.

  4. If all they need is to be reset from 4:3 to 16:9 or vice-versa, then DVDPatcher can do the job. It works on MPGs as well as DVDs.

Edit: Oops, too slow. Hi Baldrick!

LOL! I started to reply but couldn't remember the name of the program. I had to search through my collection of odds and ends. By the time I found it you guys had already replied.

Sorry guys, dvdpatcher didnt work for me. It would either fill the extra space with green nonsense or set the image off in a weird way. Is there anything else? I have several videos that are either too squished on the top and bottom, or too narrow on the sides that i would like to set right, which is why i want an AR tool, preferably without needing to convert or reencode.

Did you patch just the header or the whole file with dvdpatcher?
I used to patch the header only on mpg2 files and work quit well.

What player are you using? Try VLC or MPCHC.

NM guys i just found out that videoredo does EXACTLY what i want (althought its not free). I just click on "save as" and then "options" and from there it lets me modify the output AR. But thanks anyway for your help.

  11. DVD Patcher does exactly what you want. You probably just changed something you shouldn't have.

  13. I've recently being trying to do the same thing.

I found out how MPEG files store the aspect ratio in the sequence header. The information is on my website.

I am currently creating a basic utility to allow the aspect ratio to be changed as required. When it is finished I will post on my site. I tested it today and it works but it isn't very fast. It's written in VB.NET so requires Windows and the .NET framework to be installed.

It would be easy but MPEG files contain thousands of sequence headers so you have to search for and patch each one.

Green blocks are usually the result of patching the wrong bytes ... as I discovered during my testing
