  1. I think I have most of the settings in RB set properly. Just looking to see if I understand the Setup menu. Testing a blu-ray backup. LOTR.

    Audio Language to keep:
    Just english is checked
Limit one track for each language is checked

I'm american so those should be fine.

    Video encoding options:
Just "use deinterlacer is checked" not sure why but all the guides have it checked?

    Audio encoding options:
Keep HD audio for BD25 encoding is checked
I assume whatever HD audio the BR disk has this will keep it original?

    Subtitle language to keep:
English is checked although all the guides say keep all?
Limit one track is also checked?

    General encoding options:
Movie only playback loop is checked.
    Remove working files is checked.
IVTC sources with 3:2 pulldown is checked?

What I'm shooting for is a movie only backup. In this case LOTR with the video encoded the HD original audio untouched and the regular subtitles for just when they speak non english.

  2. De-interlacer is for the occasional interlaced VC-1 AFAIK. BDRB will probably bomb out on interlaced VC-1 otherwise, and just might anyway.

Keeping HD audio is for re-encoding to BDR (BD25) obviously, since such files are big. You wouldn't want to keep it for a BD9 encode.

The thing with subtitles is they don't take much space. And if there are forced subs, you can't be sure which stream they're embedded in. Unless you demux and examine them with BDSup2Sub. Sometimes a complex java structure disc will confuse BDRB and it won't pick up forced subs. In such a case, you can either turn on the sub stream in BDRB (right click and select on) or export *only* the forced subs from a stream with forced flag on from BDSup2Sub and remux.

As to the LOTR movies, I have both the Theatrical and Extended versions. You won't run into any difficulties assuming you're set up okay. Run inspect.exe in your BDRB folder to be sure.

IVTC will be for the occasional extra that needs it, never the main movie. Not that I've ever come across. I guess you should leave it checked, I do. I have playback looped checked as well; personal preference.

    Good luck.

  3. So I should keep subtitles to "all". The rest seems fine. Thanks. Now, how do I open all these presents?

  4. Well, I personally use Clown_BD to extract main movie (and convert audio to AC3 640 kbps), then examine the subtitles in the Clown_BD demux folder for forced subs. Then remux with main English subs and any forced subs. And I almost never do full disc unless it's an episode disc.

The above means going to extra trouble and I would guess most folks wouldn't think it worth doing. BTW, main movie with AC3 audio will often fit a BDR without re-encoding.

I can appreciate you wanting to fully understand the settings. It's fairly straightforward though. You can read more on the (long!) bug report thread.

    Good luck and Merry Christmas!

[EDIT] You should be fine if you keep all English subtitles. Deselect the rest.

BDRB is smart,it knows if a movie needs video encoding when using BD25. Most movies will fit on BD25,especially if you disable HDaudio(ac3-640 default) and BDRB won't encode the video stream unless it won't fit on a BD25.

  6. After encoding LOTR it dropped the 37 gig file to 21.8 gigs. This was on the BD25 setting. i figured it would be a tad closer to 25 gigs. Is this like dvd? Meaning a BDRE of 25 gigs is not realy 25 gigs?

  8. I want to post my results. I tried my BR of The Omega man first. I just wanted to see a 1 to 1. DvdFab to rip movie only and Imgburn to burn. Then my BR of LOTR. DvdFab to rip movie only with subs and BR rebuilder to encode and Imgburn to burn. The whole process was a lot better than the dvd early days. Seem to go off without a hitch. Sounds great and looks great. I probably won't back much stuff up but it's nice to have mostly for times when the young adults come to visit.

Thanks to all and to all...a good night.

  9. New project: Rise of the Apes test. Everything seems cool except the subs. My subs worked fine for LOTR. They apeared properly when Liv Tyler was speaking "elvish". On that test I didn't set anything special about the subs. I used those settings for the Apes movie but no forced subs. BR rebuilder has a option to force subs but the disc has two english subs. Which is which? is it posible to view them? I supose I could try forcing one or the other and encode but that seems like a lot of wated time.

  10. Yeah the elvish subs in the LOTR movies are hard-coded. You'll get 'em regardless.

One way to know ahead of time what subs you're dealing with is, as already mentioned, to demux and view them in BDSup2Sub. (There are no doubt other ways). Clown_BD is convenient in that it will extract main movie for you, and also provide a demux folder so you can analyze the subs. BDSup2Sub can tell you if forced subs are embedded in a given subtitle stream. Doing it that way only takes a few extra minutes of my time, since I run DVDFabPasskey in the background and extract the movie direct from disc with Clown_BD (AnyDVDHD will work the same since it is also a driver-level decrypter). You can, if you like, export *only* the forced subs with the force flag turned on with BDSup2Sub. Then remux, etc. with, say tsMuxer.

  11. Downloaded BDSup2Sub from the link here. Unzipped the file. I'm sure it's there but I don't see an EXE to start the program. The guide her says "Start BDSup2Sub by just double click on bd2sup2sub.jar. I don't see that file. Searched my whole computer.

they aren't hard-coded. they are in a separate (smaller) file. i recently had to do all 3 extended versions for a friend, and it took me a little while to figure out.

  14. I could have sworn they were hard-coded. Maybe my memory is at fault, but I'm going to check again.

  15. I just checked disc one of FOTR extended and I'm afraid you're mistaken.

Try remuxing without any subs at all with tsMuxer. Elvish subs are still there. (I used Digital Theater in TME to view).
Or demux video stream only and play with VLC. Same thing, elvish subs are still there.

All that's missing is [Arwen speaks] or [Elrond speaks], etc, that you also get when the main English subtitles are on.

sorry to tell you, but you are the one that is mistaken. the subtitles for the elvish spoken parts is not hard coded. the subtitles for the elvish parts is in a small .sup file, separate from the main english subtitle file.

i used my sony and oppo blu-ray players to test as well as power dvd and mpc.

and why would the subtitles for the elvish parts be hard-coded in english anyway? english hard-coded subs really does nothing to help those who speak/read spanish, french, german, japanese, etc.

  17. So demux and upload the *.sup file.

I just demuxed *all* subtitles and don't see it. BDSup2Sub detects no forced subs in any of them.

I even went through all the English subs and at most you'll see is something like: [In Elvish] or [Arwen], etc.

I've downloaded the BDSup2Sub400 file several times. It comes in as a WinRar file. I unzip it. There are several files in it like Deadbeef folder and the ico for the bdsup2sub but no exe file. I'm sure it's a simple explanation.

  19. Track one is the english subs, track four is the sigh language subs. Along those lines I found this site:

    https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=t8Xb85eyNFtZ3vaNK8gqkbQ&single=true&gid=0&output=html

It shows forced subs for movies and where they are located.

  20. Interesting site, not many listings yet, but may be useful. Bookmarked it, thanks.

The Lord of the Rings movies are shown as hardcoded. But the notes say this:

"hardcoded on some, forced on some, separate track on CEE Ext BluRays"

I presume that means there is no single, hmm, what's the word? Not version, there are the Theatrical and Extended versions. "Release"? BTW, what does CEE Ext mean? I did a search and am none the wiser.

  21. In the tools area this program BD Rebuilder has a listing. It says "Remove unwanted audio tracks, extra material or just keep the main movie". To me this sounds like you can remove extra material from the disk. Example remove just the trailer material but the main menu is intact. I don't see how this is done. None of the guides shows how to do this. Am I reading too much into the info? Maybe they mean remove everything and be left with movie only.

BD-RB does allow you to keep the main movie only and remove ALL extras. Setup allows you to configure keeping only 1 audio track and specifying which language it's in and you can similarly restrict subtitles, but it has no options to do something like "keep the main movie and this documentary on the film which I am choosing but get rid of everything else". I'm not knocking it at all, but BD-RB is not DVD Shrink in terms of providing choices on what to keep or get rid of.

  23. Wishfull thinking on my part. Having the popup search menu would be nice along with just the main movie.

I agree it's an amazing program. I don't see the same type of drop off in PQ like with a dvd. Actually I'm not sure I see any and I usually see it right away.

You can. The option is hidden and still being tested. Probably will be a standard feature eventually. I've tested it enough to know that it should work most of the time. OTOH, BDRB still has trouble with some PiP discs after quite a while now, so who knows?

Anyway, you gotta edit the INI file and add this: "ENABLE_TEST=1" without the quotes and before [paths]. New options will now appear in the Mode tab.

    Read this post by jdobbs:

    Good luck.

[EDIT] Clown_BD BD Copier can copy main movie and top menu as well. I haven't tried to selectively blank some extras and keep others, so dunno if that would work. I almost invariably do movie only except for episode discs.

  25. I will try it. Thanks

    Update:
It works on version 39.06. I'll give it a test run tonight. I feel the force.

    Update:
LOTR test: Movie with menu. Poped the disc in and the main menu came up. Moved around the menu the secondary audio was selectable even though it was unselected in Rebuilder but I didn't try it. From the main menu I selected search and picked out a scene near the end. Scene played fine. Tried the pop up menu that worked fine also. Seems great. Exactly what I want.

    Update: 1/11/2012
    V#3906
I know this is hidden function so I'm just listing my testing for others not to make a complaint about the program.

JFK test. After running JFK through rebuilder on the movie and menu only setting I was left with a folder @ 22.5G. That is to be expected. For the heck of it I loaded the output folder into rebuilder. Rebuilder shows that the extras are still there. Rebuilder has a function to play a video with a right click from the program itself. The videos seem to play fine. The extras are blanked by the program because they are not selectable from the blu-ray player but not removed from the disk.
