Does anyone know what is the speed of the hard disk used in the Seagate Expansion 2.0 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive (ST320005EXA101)? I have seen it advertised as 7200RPM, but on Seagate's website I could not find this information and I suspect that the speed might in fact be lower.

It doesn't matter because the USB2 interface is slower than the mechanical drive. USB2 sustained transfer limits around 30 MB/s (240 Mb/s). If you want more sustained transfer rate, look to an internal SATA or external eSATA drive.

The only place it might make a difference is if you run an application that does lots of random reads and writes -- like a database app. Or if you plan to remove the drive from the enclosure and put it in your computer.

Yes, I want to be able to remove the hard drive from the enclosure and install it inside my PC. Also, why buy a 5900RPM or slower hard drive when I can buy a 7200RPM?

I don't agree that a 5900RPM HDD and a 7200RPM HDD will perform the same or their performance difference will not be noticed when connected to a SATA controller. I agree about lower power consumption and quieter running, but these are less important than performance.

Without some nerdy speed testing gadget software(if it even exists) running....you COULD NOT tell the difference between the two drives.
