    Hi,

I recently downloaded a movie (avi file) and copied it to a USB flash drive which played fine when plugged into my DVD player via the USB. When I brought an external hard drive, downloaded a few movies and copied them to the hard drive, the DVD player wouldn't acknowledge any movie files. Can somebody know why and how to get it to recognise the hard drive.

    Welcome Danny01boy

Please check the hard drives format ... its format needs to be fat32, not ntfs in order to be recognized.

Use Partition Manager 11 free edition to reformat the drive to fat32 ... copy video over and it should be happy ... but be mindful that fat32 format has a maximum file size limitation of around 2 gigabytes.

You might also want to resize the clusters to 64K. I've found that this speeds up the access time considerably since most DVD/Blu Ray players will try to make their own database of what's on the drive. That can take a long time if the cluster size is small, like 4K and there are a lot of files on the drive. Also, make sure the drive is powered if it's a large capacity drive. I use a small 320 Gig laptop drive with no power supply and I've heard that up to 500 Gig "Green" drives are usually okay on most players but probably no larger. Just not enough power from the USB port...
