I spotted this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JVC-HRS388E-PRO-S-VHS-VHS-VCR-VIDEO-RECORDER-HQ-TBC-/2806754...item41598f77dd on eBay. If you need a VCR to record copy protect tapes to a DVD recorder direct or via a digital camcorder then the TBC on this model strips the Macrovision completely. I have one and it is a solid deck with one of the best TBC's out there. Just thought I would give a 'heads up'.

I've never had any problems copying PAL VHS tapes....to either another VHS or to a DVD recorder. Never received any hint of copy protection in place.

What quipment did you use? I don't know of any domestic equipment that ignores Macrovision* - that is why I value this deck. I either get brightness pumping (tape to tape) or 'This Recording Is Copy Protected' when using a DVD recorder - even when using a Digital-8 camera as FireWire passthrough.

*apart from very old VCR's like Betamax.

There are things like Easycap on Amazon, about $8, that let you copy directly from your VHS to your computer.
