I just bought a i7 980x pc off of Craiglist ($500). I love this thing except the 5 fans are killing me. I have sensitive ears. I think they are all 120mm. What recommendations do you have on the quietest case fans I can buy. The CPU fan is quiet. It is the stock intel fan and heat sink. Thanks

These are the quietest ones I have found. Virtually silent, but they don't move a lot of air. But if you have five 120mm case fans, you shouldn't need that much air movement: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811999099

I use them in most of my PCs that don't need extreme cooling. The CPU fan you have may be a PWM fan. (Pulse Width Modulated) They are controlled by the motherboard and have a four wire lead. They run very quiet when the CPU is cool. They can run at a very low RPM if needed.

One way to reduce the noise level on a PC is to but it down near the floor and you won't hear the noise near as much as when it's at ear level. I like to keep them about a foot off the floor to reduce dust pickup.

  4. Yep I second the Noctua fans. They are admittedly ugly. No idea why they chose a brown and tan color scheme, but they are high quality Austrian engineering with some the the best airflow to noise ration I've seen.

Great thanks. Those Noctua fans look like the ticket for me. I don't do much gaming and it is not over clocked. I use it for high end Cad/Cam work. So maybe I will take a couple fans out. It is a ThermalTake case.
