  1. I just built a new WinXP machine and there is no video from WMP 11. I can play .mp4 videos (Apple QuickTime), but no .mpg, DVD video, etc.

Any ideas? I've loaded all the latest updates for WinXp, etc., so I'm at a loss.

    Thank you.

Windows XP is stuck in 2001 until updated. XP doesn't have an MPeg2 decoder. That came with your DVD drive if retail, not OEM. The MPeg license is part of the retail DVD drive cost.

Don't go online with it. Instant virus trap.

  3. You need codecs that don't come with WinXP by default, there are many available that would solve the problem.

I usually install the "Combined Community Codec Pack" aka CCCP with default options when installing a new OS, even Win7 doesn't support everything natively. You also have the option to install MPC-HC at the same time which is a great media player so you don't have to use the default WMP if you don't want to.

Dscaler mpeg filters and AC3Filter is all you need to install to get that happening ...

Well, that got me DVD video, but WMP11 is still blank for .wmv, .mpg, .mpeg, .avi, etc...

  6. The only codecs/splitters I install when I set up Windows XP are FFDShow and Haali Media Splitter. They should give you everything you need to play just about anything.

WMV codecs are integral to Windows and are also included with WMP11, the fact that you can't play that format is quite unusual. Windows Media Format 11 Runtime should restore WMV playback.

  7. Turns out the reason I was seeing no video was because the "Use overlays" option was checked. Weird.

Perhaps you have a problem with your graphics card driver. The use of the overlay is usually advantageous as it provides some performance benefits.

  9. Well apparently it's a common enough issue that I found it fairly easily with a search.

Sorta like making a Model T pass a safety/smog test. In most states they just let the old models pass as "antique horse carriage class".
