Hello all,
i am moving from Taiwan to Germany.
I have some equipment from Taiwan and some of them are related to the video signalS.
I am not talking about the voltage difference, I know I will need voltage transformers...
But I am quite confused about the different video signals and their compatibilities.
That is where I would need your help.
Let's start with the hardware and some attributes.
SOURCES:
* PC: windows XP, with HD graphic card, with Blue-ray player, DVD burner/player, via HDMI output
* Playstation3: NTSC for blue rays, DVDs and games (it seems...), via HDMI
* DVD: Pioneer DV-655A (Taiwanese version?) NTSC only? via S-video or composite video
DISPLAY
HD TV 47" Esonic (local brand): NTSC only apparently
Now, in Taiwan, everything works fine.
I suppose that, when I will connect all this together (with the right voltage) in Germany, it will also work fine.
But the NTSC/PAL incompatibility will start when I will want to play European DVD s or Blue-rays.
What about a TV box subscription? Will that box be able to output in NTSC (for the TV)?
I am not even sure if I am asking the right questions, if NTSC and PAL still make sense for HD videos...
But I guess I will need to invest in some kind of converter (for the TV box).
Or would there be a PC hardware solution? like an input card that could input some PAL signals (via ?) and ouput (which signal?) through the HDMI, PC to TV connection...
For the Blue rays/DVD I may be able to use the ones from the PC. (not sure at all), or add a player in the tower...
I would like to know what would be the best and cheapest solution.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and ideas about all that!

PC components
- check power supply for 230vac/50Hz capability. If not a new PS may be required.
- graphics card should be dual standard capable
- Blu-Ray player may be region locked. Taiwan is in Reg1, Germany in Reg2.
- DVD player may be region locked
PS3
- check power supply for 230vac/50Hz capability.
- may be region locked
- maybe best to sell this.
Pioneer DV-655
- check power supply for 230vac/50Hz capability.
- may be region locked
- purchase a PAL DVD and see if it plays. If it does play, output will probably be NTSC.
Esonic HDTV
- check power supply for 230vac/50Hz capability.
- tuner will be NTSC only
- possible it accepts PAL over analog component or HDMI
- less likely it will accept PAL over composite or S-Video
--------------------------
Do this in Taiwan
1. Obtain a PAL DVD and test in all players.
2. Try to buy or borrow a Chinese DVD player that outputs PAL. Test it with the TV over composite, S-Video, analog component and HDMI. You will need it to work with at least analog componet or HDMI to connect to an external PAL/DVB set top tuner. If not you may want to sell it and get a new TV. Ideally the new TV would accept PAL and NTSC inputs. Test TV sets with the PAL DVD player. It may be cheaper to buy a new TV in Taiwan but factor in shipping costs.
Chinese brand TV sets are most likely to work in both PAL and NTSC. Sony and Samsung are least likely.Last edited by edDV; 31st Mar 2011 at 11:25.
