Sony LCD and external hard drive issues

Hello, I am hoping someone here can help me out

I have recently purchased a new 40 inch Sony Bravaria LCD Television. I have an hp 2 TB external hard Drive. I can hook the hd up to the tv but the television will not recognize any of my many avi movie files

I have been trying to convert the movies to mpeg file format but when I do the video is very tiny and in the center of the screen. Is there anyway to just have my avis play on this tv from my hard drive, I am sort of thinking i should have bought another tv.

Last December I bought a new Sony Bravia 47in LED LCD set.... which has a USB port, I too thought it would play .avi files from a thumb drive, but it doesn't support common DivX and Xvid files. I think it does support MP4 or AVCHD, not sure
Also tried playing an MPEG file, mine was also just a small pic in the middle of the screen..... so it's not you or your files,
it's the TV itself...... I guess you'd need some kind of intermediate media player between the hard drive and the TV to get it
to work
