We have converted some home super 8 movies to DVD.
I'd like to convert the .VOB file into a format that I can use in After Effects or Premiere Pro CS4.

    • Downloaded MPEG Streamclip 1.9.2
    • Bought Quicktime MPEG2 (does this automatically go into my Original Quicktime 7.6.9 application?)
    • Followed steps outlined in Convert a DVD or MPEG to DV <http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/%7Eshmhav/SVCD_on_a_Macintosh.html#edit_convert_MPEG>

I get the message: Error: can't create the DV file

Any help will be appreciated in getting me past this error message and on to a usable file format.

    Thank you

It doesn't look good, https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/289984-convert-VIDEO_TS-to-avi?p=1759358&viewfull=1#post1759358 had same problem but no solution...

And I changed the thread title so it better describes your problem.

Where are you trying to save the file? Try selecting a different location from the VOB files, e.g. the Desktop. Just in case the default folder doesn't have write access, which could happen with a copied VIDEO_TS folder.

Okay, I saved the .dv file into another folder.
Now I can see it, but when I open and try to export it with QUICKTIME, I get a message:
"The movie could not be opened. The end of the file was reached."

Back to one of my original points- I purchased QUICKTIME MPEG-2 PLAYBACK-MAC OS X-INT, it downloaded, but does it automatically apply itself to my original QUICKTIME?

All I did was download it, I don't really "see it" on my system, other than an icon that says QuickTime MPEG2 (manual)

When I click on that icon, it walks me through the download, but I don't know where the download goes.

Is HandBrake something that I might consider for changing my .vob to a .mov?

Your download is probably a .dmg disk image file, with a .pkg installer package inside it. Opening the .pkg file should bring up the installer, which should install a file "QuickTimeMPEG2.component" into /System/Library/QuickTime/ .
After the installation is done, and the apps restarted, QuickTime Player, MPEG Streamclip and other apps that rely on QuickTime for decoding, should be able to read MPEG-2 video.
The difference is that you no longer get errors like "The movie could not be opened. This is not a movie file", "QuickTime cannot play this file", etc. for MPEG-2 video content.

Thank you for helping me find the path to the QuickTimeMPEG2.component.
I've shut down QuickTime and MPEG Streamclip, but continue to get message:
"You must install the MPEG-2 Playback Component before trying to export MPEG2 files!
    You can buy it…"
