Does anyone know of or can think of a standalone DVD player that does play or COULD be firmware hacked to play DivX movies right off the net without converting to VCD?
Surely it cant be that difficult that someone hasnt tried yet?

That cannot be possible, for the sole reason, a Firmware won't had a new decompression capability, cause DivX is MPEG4, not MPEG1 or MPEG2, so to my personal belief, it is technicly not possible, unless it can already play DivX
