  1. I have been making a lot of SVCDs but never really tried VCDs so I have decided to change that.

    Question:
If source is 23.97 fps 352x240 and you need 29.97 do you:

    A- Encode at 23.97 and use pulldown.exe like for Mpeg 2 ?
B- Do a Pulldown First and then encode in Mpeg 1 ?

If B is the answer, how do you do a pulldonw on an AVI file prior to encoding (I know how with TMPGEnc but I want to use CCE) ?

    Thanks for any suggestion.

23.976fps is a supported framerate for the vcd standard. Vcd compatible dvd players are supposed to detect the difference in framerate and automatically do a real time telecine to 29.97fps as it plays. So the answer to your question is C- Do nothing. Simply encode in mpeg1 at 23.976 and hopefully your dvd player will do the rest.

The svcd standard does not support 23.976fps thats why the pulldown flags are needed. They tell the dvd player to do the telecine, whereas with vcd they are automatic.

Now not all dvd players are built to spec and some won't perform the telecine on vcds or they may do a poor job of it and cause sync problems. If this is the case there is not much you can do about it short of a firmware upgrade. Your only options would be to stick to encoding mpeg1 at 29.97fps or switch to mpeg2 with the 3:2 pulldown enabled and hope your player handles that better.
