Hi,
I've got a few video files on my PC - I have copied them to a USB stick and play them directly on my Sony TV.
But some play and some don't. What tool should I use to look at the video files to work out why some play and some don't?

Instead you should check the TV manual and see what files are supported. Better yet, get a media player that plays everything. Certainly you can't expect Sony to support much except their own stuff. Sony is the king of "not-supported".

Its a KDL-32EX403:

It says it plays DivX but that doesnt really help -

bvop is 0 in the one that plays, 1 in the one that doesn't (ie no b-frames in the one that plays)
the xvid version used is different, but I doubt that would contribute to the difference in behaviour
There could be other reasons -

Here is another example if it helps work it out.

Sony had a genuine breakthrough design in their "Trinitron" TV's and Walkman like 40 years ago, but since then nadda. Sure, they put a lot of bling-bling, so not-so-tech-savvy consumers see all those connections on their product and think it must be top shelf.

doesn't help too much - it actually makes it more confusing, because the one with b-vop 1 plays now
i'm assuming the one that "doesn't play" , works ok on PC media players?
just get a media box like wdtv, asus oplay etc... no worries about practically anything! -
You're expecting your Sony TV to play everything?
<.... insane laughter here....>
Personally, if you encode your own files this wouldn't be an issue as you would know the target format you wish them on: DvD, blu-ray, iPod, etc...
BUT, since you (obviously) didn't, then get a pirate box.... errr.... MEDIA box...
As mentioned, the WD is a good one. It's cheap.
PS: Yes indeed. Sarcasm in this post.I hate VHS. I always did.
