We have 1 blu-ray player and buy only blu-ray movies now, but we have DVD players in 2 other rooms and also like to travel with DVDs playing in the car for the kids. So my question is ... is it realistic to rip our blu-rays to our hard drive (with DVD Fab HD Decrypter?), shrink the file size (is there a recommended program?), and then burn the resized movie to DVD (with Imgburn?)? I'd really like to be able to do this and appreciate any help. Thank you!

  2. I convert blurays to dvd for the kids. I use anydvd to rip the disc to hd. Then use convertxtodvd to convert the bluray to dvd. Then use imgburn to burn to dvd. If I have a bluray that has multiple files as the main movie, then I use bdrb in main movie mode to combine them into a single file that convertxtodvd will import.

Thank you. Seems like a very practical thing to do. I'm going to try. Thanks again.

I've tried a few pieces of software and found MultiAVCHD to be the most reliable for me. I've converted several and they have played on a number of different brand dvd players.

I have used AVStoDVD with success. It seems pretty quick, too. I haven't used multiAVCHD to convert Blu-Ray to DVD, but I have had rock solid performance using it to author AVCHD and BD-R disks so I would imagine it is good at converting to DVD as well.

I used AVStoDVD a few times, but it choked on DTS-HD MA audio streams in the last couple I tried. Had to demux and convert the audio separately with ClownBD, and used HCenc for the video. If I have to do this in the future, I think multiAVCHD will be the tool I'll try first.

Hi Kerry56, have you tried the latest 2.3.2 alpha? It has some improvements in DTS tracks handling.

I also have used avstodvd to convert bluray to dvd. It has worked beautifully. I only have two bluray players (a ps3 and a bluray rom drive on my pc) but both are connected to the same tv.

The conversions look outstanding. Probably a little better than a printed dvd since you're starting with a higher source and eliminating bonus features and extra soundtracks and the like. If you output for a dual layer dvd the results are brilliant and worth the effort. Then you have a bluray print version and a downconverted dvd that can play in any player at top notch quality (top for sd dvd that is - of course it is not high definition but looks really good).

BD Rebuilder has also added dvd-video as an option for output.

  11. I'm sure this is a clueless question, but to write a Bru-Ray movie to a DVD or just backup a Blu-Ray movie you 1) Have to have a Blu-Ray writer. 2) Have a good software, and 3) either have a blank BD or DVD which ever way that you're going in..... 4) How many movies (BD) can you get on a blank BD and will you lose much quality if you write from BD to DVD ?

Backing up my DVD movies I use DVD Shrink and Nero. I can't tell the difference between the copy and the original. I disabled and I'm on disability and money is real limited and the only reason that I tell you guys this is because for the price..... what is the best internal BD writer, best software,(hopefully free) and the best blank BD's ?

At Office Depot, I keep a look for the blank DVD's to go on sale and I get 100 TDK for $ 14.99 to $ 19.99.... Their sales are TDK or Memorex and I have had some of trouble out of Memorex.

I want to thank you guys fro your informative information and do want you to know that I read tons of the posts/threads to try and find the answers for my questions. Sometimes I read so much that I feel that my head is going to blow.... as I'm sure that you guys do also....

Love the site and there is a lot of smart and helpful people on here,

    Thanks again Tommy

This one gets high marks all over. Good price and does a good job.

best media...verbatim BR media hands down...other brands work but like dvd media, Verbatim stands alone

if u can, get Verbatim, Sony or even 50 packs of the TDK media at office depot you'd be better off...be careful of the memorex media, especially the -R stuff...IMO 100 pax are just cast offs of media they find "3rd rate" so they throw it in a 100 pack and sell it cheaper...I get TDK 50 pax all the time and they're RITEKF16 stamped, work good for me

software...use BD rebuilder to compress it down to mkv or if u wanna keep the original file structure with menus, it'll do that to(like dvd shrink). You can even shrink it down to a dvd5 size mkv and u can play it in your BR player...thats if your player supports MKV/AVCHD/X264 playback

If your backing up a BD you need a BD-ROM to rip. To burn a diectory compressed to fit on DVD9 you only need a normal DVD burner. You don't need a BD burner to backup on DVD9.
