Hi. I have recently needed to rebuild my system after a disk failure. When rebuilding the system, the OS didn't create a C: drive, and the boot drive ended up as H: I can reassign any drive letter except the one containing the boot files!! The only software I can't reinstall is VOB2MPG Pro because it errors out right at the start, complaining of an invalid C: drive. Is there any fix for this? Thanks for any help. Simon

  2. From a command line:
    SUBST C: X:\
Where X:\ is the boot drive, or some other drive or folder.

That might be enough to get the software to install. Then you can change the shortcut to the drive where the software is really installed.

Or you could map a network share to drive C.

Thanks very much. Your suggestion gets the installer running, and I can now tell it where to put the program files, but then it falls over because it can't find setup.msi This is driving me mad!

  4. Have you tried putting the installer on drive C?

Well, I guess I have, because the new drive C: assignment contains all the folders I am using. Windows Explorer now shows drive C: with everything in it - setup files and all - so I can't understand why it wouldn't work.

  6. I don't know about VOB2MPG Pro in particular, but if you are running a 64 bit version of Windows a lot of 32 bit software won't install correctly.

If you have the software installed on another computer you could try just copying the application folder from that computer to this one. Then create a link to the main EXE in the Start menu. I have many applications installed on a network share. All my computers map that share as drive G and can run the applications from there. The free version of VOB2MPG 2.5 works that way but not all programs will.

Update: it doesn't work - the software creates a machine-specific licence, so it won't port to another PC. Guess I'll just have to look for some different software, which is a shame because this one does exactly what I want. Thanks for all your help. Simon

Simon - you should be able to install on drives other that C. Can you provide screenshots of the errors you see?

Addendum: it's only fair to point out that this is not the only bit of software that's acting strangely on my re-built PC. Ulead (Corel) PhotoImpact 12, which used to run fine, now installs ok but refuses to run. It ran for a few days with compatibility set to Windows 2000, but tonight it's refusing to run under any circumstances, despite a series of reboots. And Windows Explorer 8 wouldn't download the Adobe Acrobat Reader, complaining about a DEP error. However, Firefox downloaded it without a murmur. Everything else - Microsoft Office, Corel VideoStudio and a number of smaller programs - all install and run perfectly. My operating system used to be Vista, but I haven't got the install disk and Microsoft ignored my very polite request for a new copy, so I had to install XP SP1 and work through the tedious number of updates (about 150) to get to SP3. AVG 2011 reports the disk as clean, and CCleaner finds no fault.

Am I wasting my time.......!? Is there any good system analysis software I can download to thoroughly check the installation and see if there's a strange glitch that may be causing these anomalies?

    Thanks for any help.

  12. My guess is VOB2MPG Pro's DRM wrapper has to write some secret information on the C drive and refuses to accept a SUBSTituted drive.

This is just the installer having issues - not the software itself..... Are you running setup.exe? If so can you try running the MSI file instead, firstly from the H drive?

Sorry - I already tried that. The results are exactly the same as in the screen shots.
