SO,
I bought this great show that my sister and I used to watch in the late 70's/early to mid 80's time frame (Into The Labrynth), and I was astounded that all 3 seasons were in 3 dvds...
I went to watch them tonight and realized that the dvds were in PAL format, rather than NTSC, and neither my stupid Sony DVD player and stupider Magnavox dvd/vhs recorder would play the damned things!![]()
Here's what I am hoping to accomplish in this post, even though I do not know if it is possible or not.
1. I am going to run a hardware test on my internal and external dvd roms, to see if they will play them on my computer.
2. If one of my computers is able to read the dvds, I would like to try to rip them and convert them to NTCS.
3. I had purchased AnyDVD a few years back, and have used it in conjunction with DVD Shrink and IMG Burn multiple times with 99.9% success rates, but I have never tried to convert a PAL DVD to an NTSC DVD.
4. So, I want to know if it is possible to rip and convert a PAL to an NTSC, I guess, and if so, how???
Anyhelp that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated...
I also own TMPG Studios and a host of other software that I have purchased (including Adobe Audition, although I have never used it yet)....
I need to know if this is possible and, if so, how to perform the requested actions...
Thanks to any and all who assist in this....

AnyDVD, DVDShrink, DVDFab HD Decrypter, should remove protections and regional coding. So when you burn them to a new disc it should play in any DVD because it wont be region specific.
-
Are you sure it's a pal issue ? Maybe just regonial coding as cowboy mentions.
Converting pal to ntsc is not worth it....maybe if https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/166266-PAL-NTSC-DVD-Conversion-%28patch-method%29?h...light=pal+ntsc works it would be worth it. -
I thought removing the regional coding, meant the removal of the regional television system PAL or NTSC formats.
-
You thought wrong. See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_region_code
If there was also a PAL/NTSC issue to deal with, it would help if we knew the country from where the OP is posting. "Land of the Dead" is not helpful. (There are reasons why location is asked, people.) -
Heh...Land of the Dead = Arizona, USA...the reason why I wrote land of the dead is because I came here from Massachusetts, which was green, lush and living...here, the desert is hot and dry and there are no such things as "real" trees...I consider this place the land of the dead because everywhere there is sand and dead dirt, not the fertile soil that we had back in MA...but I digress...
The movies are PAL, I bought them from Amazon.com, and was really excited to see that the show was finally on DVD, and had not really considered to look where the regional encoding was from. I normally do not have this problem with Amazon, but there is always a first time for everything. And, since I had bought the DVD series about 4 months ago, and just last night got around to trying to watch it, I am kind of out of my return time frame.
I was just hoping that I could rip the movies and then convert them while ripping them with like AnyDVD, DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, something...I don't know...just figured this is the place to find out what's what with video ripping/encoding, etc...

I came from N California, 40+ inches of rain a year, cold and wet, to AZ. I prefer warm and dry.
(Though it will be 108F today.

One easy option is to use a DVD player that can play PAL DVDs, such as one of the Philips models, maybe: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Philips-DVP3980-F7-DVD-Player/14235535 You will still need to run them through DVD Shrink to remove regional codes, but this will preserve all menus, etc. You will likely have to burn them to DL DVD discs to keep the quality, but you could try to 'shrink' them down to a single layer disc size. Using DL discs (Verbatim only!), would be the fastest as likely no shrinking or re-encoding needed.
Next option is to re-encode them to a more compact format, such as Divx/Xvid for playback on a suitable set top player. Philps from Walmart again. That will take time and you would lose all menus. Episodic discs are more complicated to set up for encoding.
Last and most time consuming is to convert them from PAL to NTSC. This can get complex. Keeping the menus with this method is very complex. -
Not necessarily. Many, but not all, Philips players can still be made region free and there is no need to rip any region 2 PAL DVDs to use such players.
I got curious so I checked and the original poster is correct that he has PAL DVDs. This set was only released in region 2 as far as I can determine. -

ConvertXtoDVD did it for the one Region 2 set that I had - rare 1983 miniseries; it would plan on a Coby DVD player, not any others in the house.

sweet, thanks for all the info guys...giving your suggestions a try tonight after I get out of work...
@ redwudz, by chance in the PHX/TMP area?
Also, the player I have in my bedroom is this Magnavox: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Sylvania-Dvd-Recorder-Vcr-Combo/11088889#ProductDetail and the one that is in my living room is a Sony http://www.walmart.com/ip/Sony-DVP-SR500H-Upscaling-DVD-Player/13968944
As for going divx or something similar, nah...I want to be able to watch them on my regular dvd players, not on my laptop or desktop...lol...
As for using verbatim discs, not something that I consider worth investing in. I have used Memorex discs for the last 10 years, and I like them better than most of the others that I have used.
@ filmboss80, yep, British...love British shows, be they comedy, mystery, or even drama...Into the Labrynth was one of those as a kid that really sparked for me for sci-fi and mystery...
Here is the link for the show: http://www.amazon.com/Into-Labyrinth-NON-USA-FORMAT-Kingdom/dp/B002EXIRXS/ref=sr_1_8?i...2410930&sr=8-8 (also the exact format that mine are in, but I only paid $20.00 for mine off Amazon)...
@ classfour, thanks, I will take a look at that prog tonight after I get home from work...
I'm out, working from noon to 9....talk to everyone later...."Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven" ~ JOHN MILTON, PARADISE LOST -
SWEET!
So, I ripped the movie with AnyDVD & backed it up with DVD Shrink, which made it region free...I am now waiting for the burn to finish, so I can check the first of the three disks, and see if it will play on my DVD Players (listed above)...wish me luck, and thanks again for all the great info everyone!
I will post once the first disk is done & let you all know how things went...."Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven" ~ JOHN MILTON, PARADISE LOST -

Blimey, I love this issues regularity on this forum.
For ten years I have been buying PAL dvd's from various sources, mainly the UK, and have used either Philips dvd players (Easily hackable) or Pioneer 420, not so easily hackable. Many dvd players will play PAL on an NTSC TV but need the discs to be region free ( A Separate issues from PAL/NTSC). So you could rip one of the discs to a blank as has been suggested and the magnavox may well play the backup.
Spending $60-$80 removes all need to talk about converting , if you want to save that and get hours of frustration and learning curve and a resulting disc without a good menu system, fine you go ahead.Last edited by victoriabears; 22nd Aug 2010 at 13:23.
PAL/NTSC problem solver.
USED TO BE A UK Equipment owner., NOW FINISHED WITH VHS CONVERSIONS-THANKS -
For DVD's that don't use the latest encryption's/protections, as I suppose yours don't, you dont really need AnyDVD. Shrink also removes encryption's/protections.
Just a thought, in case you downloaded a trial version of AnyDVD or your version stop working. -
Actually, I bought the life time subscription a few years back (think it was 2007 or 2008), right before they stopped selling them....it was too good of a deal to pass up, and on a holiday sale for like 60$ US, I couldn't refuse...best investment that I have made so far in software (unlike the version of Adobe Audition that I bought from one of the local colleges)..."Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven" ~ JOHN MILTON, PARADISE LOST -
Ok. so how do I mark this thread as SOLVED ?
