how can i convert avi to gif without losing too much quality?
so far i was using total video converter but the result was crap
is there any something better?

VirtualDub has the ability to export as animated GIF. You will lose some quality as animated GIF only supports 256 colors.

in VD it come out more crummy then anything

It probably has to do with how the 256 colors are chosen for the animated GIF. Some programs use a fixed palette spread evenly across the 16 million possible RGB colors. Others try to optimize for the particular animation. In animated GIFs you should avoid smooth gradients and the use of lots of colors.

yea just i saw someone that made very cool and loseless quality animated signature

That animated GIF has only 256 colors. They are just well chosen colors and well dithered.
