  1. I was happily ever after with "ffmpeg -sameq", recently I come accross to an file which made ffmpeg crush with "missing picture in access unit" everytime.

I need and alternative that can re-encode an 1080p H.264 Mpeg4 AVC to MPEG2 with with minimal quality loss?

Read the mencoder manual but could find something like -sameq,

    thanks

avs2dvd or favc are portable alternatives so personally i just use one of them, in not aware of cmd alternatives, but if its a one time use theres no reason why you shouldnt use avs2dvd or favc, unzip....use....delete

  5. avs2dvd gave and runtime error
favs seems very good, yet i requires mono library, I'm downloading it right now.

Does avisynth don't have GUI or I'm doing it wrong?

avs2dvd and favc require net framework.

    avisynth
doesnt have a GUI but there are one or 2 available for it, check the avisynth product page here on videohelp for more info

  7. got favc working, yet cannot find any box or button for sameq and I don't want my output in dvd form, I want plain mpeg2

PS: I don't need any audio support! its a soundless video

there isnt a sameq option in any of them... just a no brainer program to convert to mpg2.

if you want just one file in mpeg2 format.

1- convert video with avs2dvd and select to create elentary streams (audio + video)

2- mux audio and video with ImagoMPEG-Muxer

a simpler way would be to use one of my favourite ffmpeg gui Avanti

    1- open source
2- select audio and video settings
    3- select container (mpeg2)
    4- convert

if you dont want a dvd structure i recommend using avanti

  10. as I mentioned ffmpeg does not work on this particaular file ("missing picture in access unit")

so I need something else to reenc this stripped 1080p H.264 Mpeg4 AVC to an MPEG2 file with minimal quality loose, so I can mux it back and watch it.

just follow this method...avs2dvd will determine which encoder and bitrate to use to avoid quality loss.

also try this small mencoder gui: Automen
    http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1018336

should work...select 7000 or higher as video bitrate

  14. Thanks!, thats what exactly I was looking for, a parameter for mencoder I can push into cmd.

yet about bitrate, the file seems to be having
    Bit rate mode : Variable
    Bit rate : 15.2 Mbps
what bitrate should I enter to mencoder?

    use the following bitrate calculator

    https://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm

select dvd and fill in the rest of the data

if you're resizing to dvd resolution i wouldnt go above 6000 or 7000

  17. about the terminology what does the varieble bitrate implies? the 15Mbps mentioned there is the peak or the average?

I don't really care about the size I'm just going watch it and delete it, so I guess its more the merrier for me?
is there anything wrong with having too big bitrate?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variable_bitrate

if you're doing a 2 pass conversion select variable bitrate

some dvd players will play mpeg2 streams but i think only if the bitrate is below 8000

Yes, higher the bitrate, the harder to decode = choppy playback on older systems

IIRC , you were doing this because your system couldn't play the original file in the first place.

automen as far as i know doesnt fill the video bitrate accordingly to the source quality, just try severral values on a 1 min sample to test it out

    @poisondeathray thanks for the reminder
