This is more of a lame question, but its been on my mind for some time now. Does anybody know the reason for why player vlc player, when playing xvid encodes

Anybody know how come vlc player can play xvids without pausing to decode previous/forward frames whenever you skip to different positions inside its timeline..when I play a 375 encode i made, and click at various positioins on the timeline, it instantly plays without first decoding (or whatever it actually does) before playing from that spot. vdub, however, does not, but instead has to decode the prev/forw frames before finally playing, which take several seconds or longer for me. I realize that vdub is not a stand alone player, but I usually use it to play my captures and (xvid) encodes for different reasons.

    Thank you.

  2. VLC seeks to the nearest keyframe and starts playback from there. It doesn't matter if playback starts a few seconds away from the seek position. VirtualDub is an editor. When you seek to a particular frame you must see exactly that frame. So it has to go the keyframe immediately before the chosen frame, then decode each frame up to that chosen frame in order to display it. You can get VirtualDub to act much like VLC by holding down the shift key while seeking. It will only stop on and display keyframes.

Ah, yes. EGGcellent.. seeking to nearest keyframe. Makes sense now, thank you.

Like I said earlier, i may use vdub to play some of my files. Just that sometimes I like to just jump to a certain area, and it was annoying me that I didn't get the full connection. I got it now, thank you!
