    Hello media experts.
We are forming a TV channel to broadcast pre-recorded lectures for college students. Some of these pre-recorded lectures are in the .avi format while others are in the .mov and .vob formats.

Does anyone know if we can use the above media formats to broadcast our lectures to TV?
    Many thanks

If you are feeding a community cable channel, they are going to want NTSC on specific media (S-VHS/Hi8/MiniDV tape or standard DVD* usually). If this is live they will have specific requirements.

If this is a closed college system, somebody is in charge of setting standards.

If this is a PBS station for on-air transmission, they will have very specific requirements.

    * see https://www.videohelp.com/dvd What is DVD?

"avi" divx/xvid probably needs conversion to DVD
"vob" probably needs to be authored and burned to DVD

You first need to go to the site of transmission to see what capabilities they already have, as well as what they would require of you. Like edDV said, as long as the video is NTSC (as you are in the US) with the frame rate and IRE, pedestal, and chroma levels within safe parameters, the final format will simply need to be whatever the telecaster can play back for transmission.

many thanks everyone for the excellent answers. i though want to add that these lectures to be broadcast are on DVD and that the broadcasting is in the Middle East.
1- does this matter at all?
2- can we play the DVD and broadcast it to viewers with no major loss in quality?

    thanks everyone!

The country of playback (you don't specify exactly) will most likely be a PAL or SECAM country, and I assume (since you state your location as California), your DVDs will be NTSC. That could definitely pose a problem. Although DVD players over there can usually handle NTSC DVDs, there may be a definite issue when it comes to the broadcasting pipeline.

Again, you are going to have to check with the broadcaster/telecaster -- not with us, at this point.

And if you don't know about incompatibilities in broadcasting standards, do a search on NTSC, PAL, and SECAM.

Ask them for their media standard requirements and post it here so we can help.

many thanks. i certainly will check on their media standard requirements. BTW, the country is Bahrain and they certainly use PAL standard over there.
Many thanks for your valuable advice.

But they may still accept NTSC and convert there.
