  1. I have a video in DVD which fits fine in a 4BG DVD. So far the only way I found to add subtitles to it was to CONVERT it, but NO WAY to do it with "passthrough" option. So the video ALWAYS ends up re-encoded.

Is there any way to add subtitles without re-compression?
(Tried authoring it, but ANY video format I throw in there says "unrecognized format" (VOB, MPEG headed or not, TS, M2V, etc etc. (most of them from MPEG Streaclip)

Do you know any trick for that?

So you have a standard DVD structure (video_ts folder with IFO, BUP and VOB files in it), and you want to replace or add a new set of subtitles to it ?

Assuming these are soft-subs, this guide will take you through the how-tos : https://forum.videohelp.com/forums/20-User-guides

Assuming you've got your DVD as a VIDEO_TS folder on your hard drive, use SubtitleCreator and follow this guide: https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/277950-How-to-add-new-subtitles-to-an-existing-DVD

I'm sure the above methods will work, but I do it this way:
Demux the DVD to video and audio file(s). Can discard any languages you don't need.
    Many methods, PGCdemux for instance.
Reauthor using these + the subtitle in SRT format using GfD.
PgcDemux can also give you a list of chapter breaks in "Celltimes.txt" that GfD can import.

You lose the original menu, but usually no great loss, I prefer a simple screen with maybe a screencap, or image from the film poster, and a "PLAY" button, which GfD can do trivially.

I find this easier than trying to hack an existing VOB fileset to insert a subtitle.
