I have successfully put subtitles into an AVI movie and positioned them at the bottom of the screen OK, with Mac ffmpegX, but the time code and the total time elapsed appears top left of screen. Anyone know how to avoid that?

The Filters tab [Preview] function in ffmpegX (by way of mplayer) is known to overlay a time stamp in the top left corner of a video, but that is added on-the-fly and is not part of the converted output file.
While playing, you can toggle the OSD (on screen display) mode by using the "o"-key repeatedly.
