I am a newbie network administrator (3 years and I haven't been fired yet). The network I inherited has APC pro 7--to APC UPS (Appx 1000 VA)--to server and stuff...(both are pretty garden variety, so I don't think we need to get more specific?) UPC software is configured to shutdown everything after 10 minutes or so... Not enuf batt power to keep things going much longer... we're a small company (30 users)-- so it is, what it is...

I recently read an article in an APC "newsletter" that said you shouldn't do this..their explanation was that it is not UL approved...

    Comments? Experience?

I am network administrator because nobody else is even close to qualified--or wants to do it--I would give it up in a heartbeat (very thankless part of my job) I am an electrical engineer by education/training/experience

From my background, all I see happenning here is: surge arrestor clamps spikes... then UPS clamps what surge arrestor didn't get...and applies battery power when line voltage goes away... Am I missing something?

    Thank in advance

  2. Not sure about the electrical aspects, but I was told very clearly by an APC tech that the proper connection method is APC unit to the wall, protected equipment to the APC. Nothing else in the chain, and this would invalidate the monetary damage protection.

Never seen any problem related to such a connection, and I see a LOT of lightning and surge damage.

There is a very active and knowledgeable forum in Australia called Whirlpool that covers lots of areas - might be worthwhile a visit.

    UPS to wall, period.
Try to use just UPS plugs for power, but small surge strip into UPS won't hurt. Just keep load within UPS specs.

Use separate circuits if you can, don't overload the wall sockets.
