  1. I recently encoded a DVD to add to my HTPC for ease of access. After extracting the VOBs, I used Handbrake to encode to a x264 mkv file with default settings. During static scenes, these artifacts aren't noticeable. When objects move, they are seen at the edges (see attached picture). Why? Can it be fixed?

It's interlaced but I thought handbrake should automatically deinterlace for you. Maybe you can force it to deinterlace under the video tab.

Is it from a home recorded dvd?

  3. Thanks for the help. I will try turning on Handbrake's deinterlace in the "Filters" tab. The source DVD is a retail-bought DVD (Amazon.com).

  4. If it's a movie you don't want to deinterlace it. Assuming you're in R1, you probably want to IVTC it back to 23.976fps. Handbrake comes up with new terms for the these things, so I have no idea what it calls an IVTC.

An untouched 10 second sample from the source would help to figure it out.

Don't use deinterlace in Handbrake - it's lower quality. Enable Decomb and Detelecine (i.e. set both to default). They'll handle any telecined and/or interlaced segments while leaving static parts alone.
