    What he said . . .

When you record to a blank in a DVD recorder the recorder will, be default, leave the session open so you can write more to it if you chose to. However while the session is open, most other devices will not play it back. Finalising is the process of closing the session so that other devices can play the disc.

    Caveats :

    1. Finalising a disc means it can no longer be written to
    2. Sometimes players of the same brand as the recorder will play unfinalised discs. It is much rarer to see this happen across brands
    3. Some recorders can unfinalise a disc that they wrote to allow further writing. Not all offer this facility

I have read the manual and it does mention finalize..do I have to go into a sub menu to do this as when I have recorded an item nothing happens after I have finished ..I was expecting a dialougue box or such like
    Thanks Dave

Again, read the manual. It should explain where you find the options to do this. I know my Pioneer pops up and asks, but every recorder is different
