I've got this problem and maybe someone can put me in the right direction here: I need to get to a playable mkv HD file.

The problem is I'm not starting from an HD disk BluRay or whatever. What I have is a mov file which I am exportinge from Avid Media Composer. And I need to get to an MKV file I can play on my LG BD390 player, that reads such files.

Those are HD files that play beautifully on the LG. It's probably the most practical way for playing compact high quality HD files.

So I'm willing to use it on a documentary I did.

What program or programs should I use to go from my mov to an mkv with the highest possible quality?

  2. If the audio and video already use suitable codecs you can just remux with MkvTools.

MKVmerge only accepts h264 files or avi files, but it seems to be tricky on what do you want to merge.

I got to do a video mixdown and audio mixdown export from Avid (the edit program I am using). Then converted the mov video file to H264 and the wav audio file to AC3. Then merged them with MKVmerge, but are not recognized by the LG bluray player I always play MKV in.

For separate video & audio files I would need an H264 conversion program that can merge both INSIDE, at the same time.

  4. The LG probably has very specific requirements for frame size. Most Blu-ray players require 1920x1080 or 1280x720. They won't accept "odd" sizes like 1440x1080 (typical for HDV camcorders) or 1920x816 (2.35:1 Blu-ray rips after cropping).

    That is not the case.

First of all the output file is 1920x1080. Second the LG played the other tests I made flawlessly.

It only showed an error when I separated video and audio, and processed only video through Sorenson Squeeze, which I used for the H264 conversion. Then I added the AC3 file with MKVmerge.

There's probably a way to merge that in the Sorenson, but I couldn't find it.
