What I have: a 15 GB 1920.1080 2-hour HD file downloaded off of my TiVo and then run through TiVo Decoder to remove the MAK for further manipulation.

What I want: a 2 GB file, preferably something like 1280 x 720, that I can burn to a DVD and play using the DivX compatibility in my DVD player. (I have two of these I want to put on one disc, hence 2 GB.) To do this, according to the manual, it needs to adhere to the following formats:

    DivX versions: 3.11, 4.12, 5.0, 5.1
    Audio: CBR MP3, VBR MP3, Mono MP3, DivX AC3

Is there a good free tool for the job? AutoGK won't recognize a file so big, and HandBrake won't convert to XviD.

(Is there a tutorial around here that I failed to find? I'm happy to do my homework and read up.)

    Thanks much!

I think that the previous version (0.9.3) of handbrake supported avi/divx. Try it.

Looks like! (Why'd they take the support out?)

Giving it a shot now. I guess we'll see if we have something in about two hours

@clemon79 - just want to clairfy that you have confirmed your dvd player can play high def divx files. Otherwise you'll be limited to standard definition files 720x480 or lower. I know you probably know that just wanted to state it for the record.

As it happens, I didn't, and found out the hard way that it does not. Ah well. It's still an interesting exercise, so I'm trying 848x480 next. If that doesn't go I might have to try 720x480, although wouldn't that mess with the aspect ratio, since that's not a direct conversion of the original 1920x1088?

I have built some batch files to do this with xvid_encraw. It allows you to use avisynth files to encode to avi (xvid). Here is an instruction packet that I threw together for someone else.

I have used Handbrake 0.9.3 for avi (xvid) conversions in the past. It does something funky with the way it muxes avi files. My player wouldn't accept the video straight from Handbrake, and I needed to remux them all with vdub before they would work.

I'll check 'em out, thanks! I got Handbrake 0.9.3 to work at 720x400, but the resulting video is playing back with letterbox bars (the original was full-widescreen, of course) so I'm thinking I can still improve something. When I tried a width of 848 it came back with "HD not supported" in my DVD player when I tried it, but I am thinking the height might have clocked in at 481 in which case, yeah, just over the limit. I think.

So now I'm kinda hellbent to get this right.

EDIT: I looked. WOW. WAY over my head.

While I'm thinking about it, let me ask something: The queue under 0.9.3 isn't working right for me...it won't enter the source info, for example, and then when I try to run the queue it just makes zero-byte files because it acts like it's encoding nothing. I have to run the files individually. (Which for my purposes is totally fine, mind you.) Is this a known issue with 0.9.3?

I never had a problem with the queue under Handbrake 0.9.3. That was on a Vista64 machine. Been a while since I have used Handbrake though.
