  1. Hello everybody,

it's been hours and hours since I started trying to encode and edit files from a canon camera that came as .MTS files. To my total surprise the files played just fine in WMP (what a shock) but I was unable to do anything else with them.

I have googled and searched and tried everything I was able to find, nothing worked so far. I am unable to load those files into virtualdub for editing. I have installed plugins that are supposed to work with .MTS files and they seem to do so for everybody else on this planet but not for me.

    Here are the problems:
    1. VirtualDub first gave me a weird error about the file (unable to select blabla something)
    2. Now virtualdub tells me the mts file has no video stream. (i don't think so, since I just watched it)

All I want to do is get my videos out of this pesky mts format and into something I can use for editing or to burn onto a dvd or upload to youtube or whatever.

I don't really know what original codec is inside this retarded MTS file since I have no access to the contents whatsoever. At this point I am just majorly annoyed and really don't know what else to try. All I know is that I have great video footage that I can not use for anything and that really frustrates.

Please help and let me know how I can convert these MTS files to AVI or anything else that is usable. Please!

Use the batch files to convert to Mjpeg, Mpeg2, or Huffyuv

The best app at the moment to convert your MTS files is Neoscene. Not free, however.

  3. I think I am stuck in a 64bit nightmare here. I have managed to create an avisynth script that will let me open my mts file in a 32bit version of virtualdub, unfortunately I only have 64bit codecs installed so I can't do much with them. Thanks for the hint though.

Nero 9 is currently working with Windows 7. You can use this to convert mts (AVCHD) files to standard-def mpeg2 file and to create a regular DVD. You do need at least a quad-core PC to make your work easier. If editing these mts files/making a DVD is only a one-time deal, it is not worthwhile to buy Nero 9 and a new PC though
