sometimes south park is really stupid and just offensive for the sake of being offensive, but every once in a while they hit comedy gold and it's almost always cartman that's at the center of it, he's got to be one of the best characters ever conceived of in a series.

You say that almost like Cartman is a real person, a real entity, and has some kind of input into the show.....

    That's old.

deadrats, I think that you're thinking of Family Guy.

Noahtuck, Cartman is real. And he has about a million or so clones.

    2 things:

    a) there is offensive funny and there is just truly stupid, for instance when they portray Christ taking a dump on someone that's just stupid, as is when they show cartman doing the same thing, likewise when they portray an icon of the Virgin Mary bleeding from Her rectum, that's just in poor taste. now there are times when they engage in social/political/religious commentary when they are very funny, even though it may be a tad offensive to the groups they are mocking, a good example is when the targeted the scientologist or the mormons, they managed to get their point across without descending into the truly vulgar and it was some funny stuff.

    2) while cartman may not be a real person, the creators have assigned a distinct personality to the character and it seems to lend itself quite well to really good satire and commentary.

basically at times south park seems like it could be a george carlin but more often than not seems to settle for a drunken andrew dice clay at the bottom of his career.

I think everything should be fair game to make light of even if those targeted (or even those not targeted) find it offensive. It's when we take things so seriously that we can't even make light of them that things escalate into wars and violence and all sorts of awful things. If words or depictions of things like this offend people it's because they're allowing themselves to become offended by those words or depictions. You know what they say about sticks and stones...

I actually find Family Guy funny like this because Seth McFarlane allows nothing to be sacred. If it weren't for TV censors I bet it would really get off the wall.

i agree, if you're going to target one group then all groups should be fair game, but there is social commentary and satire and then there's just vulgar and bad taste.

for instance, by tradition i am Greek Orthodox and have no problem with someone poking holes in Christian Doctrine or satirizing, for instance on the simpsons, maggy is being given an IQ test and the test moderator says something along the lines of "your baby scored 160, that's amazing for a christian", i thought that was funny even though it's a shot at christians everywhere.

likewise when american dad or family guy does some satire with Jesus, i have no problem with that.

what i have a serious problem is that it's alright to satirize Jesus but they won't even think of allowing the same with The Prophet Mohamed, south park would never consider depicting The Prophet taking a shit (as they do with Christ) nor would they have a statute of him bleeding from his backdoor as the did with The Virgin Mary.

for the record, i do not want to see a depiction of The Prophet taking a dumb or bleeding from his backdoor, as it would be in equally bad taste as when anyone is shown doing that on south park. then you have episodes where that gay teacher is shown f*cking his slave in the ass in front of the class as a way of getting fired, in graphic detail and then when that gay teacher has a sex change he/she is shown having scissor with another chick, again in graphic detail. this isn't funny, it's not social commentary, it's just in bad taste and done for shock value.

as for family guy, they are definitely the funniest cartoon on tv on a consistent basis just as the simpsons is the best source for consistent social commentary, and while family guy may at times seem over the top, the seth and company are extremely talented and know how to be funny without being in bad taste, hell if you ever watched robot chicken on adult swim, on like 2 or 3 am, on cable when almost anything goes, they still have boundaries over which they won't go, but they still manage to be ridiculously funny.
