I just got a new box set of a TV series from china and every disc has scratches on them!
Can they be repaired so I can play the DVDs on a player or even make back up copies? I saw some of those DVD repair kits online…..do they work? I also saw people mentioning taking it to a game store to fix it.
Its odd the disc all look new and the places where they are scratched doesn’t look like it’s from shipping. For instance some of that scratches are like little lines bunched together like a lightning bolt, or they are only on one part of the disc. Some discs I can play while other I can only make it half way or not play at all.
Thanks![]()

Maybe you can repair them. We've had tons of posts on this in the past. Go to the top of ALL the forums (do NOT search within individual forums as that has been broken for a long time unless maybe the recent changes fixed it) and search to find them. Some use kits, some use toothpaste, some have had jewelry stores polish the discs for them. There's no guarantees that your discs can be salvaged depending on the actual damage, but it's not impossible offhand either. You have a chance. I have used a kit with a paste and have sometimes had it succeed and sometimes not. In my experience in most cases you can at least get the disc to a point where it can be copied. Use DVDFab HD Decrypter which will keep working until it gets the entire disc copied. The old DVD Decrypter is much inferior at this in my experience.
And for any follow up posts who complain about "warez", please note that Goonies is not necessarily talking about bootlegs. I bought a box set from China too of an old Hong Kong TV series that was a legitimate pressed release and not some bootleg. -
Thanks jaman98 for your post.
The DVD set I have from china is official from CCTV, I really hope it can be repaired considering english subs on this show is very rare.
Im new to DVD backup and I use the trial version DVDFab, the program just scans the DVD and never seems to get to the part where I can tell it to backup. Does DVDFab HD Decrypter function differently in reading the disck with scratches? I like DVDFab for the simplicity of one click, but if DVDFab HD Decrypter works please tell any other programs I would need for it.
On the net people mentioned taking it to the video game store (since they sale used games) to repair or even buy those DVD repair kits from Radio Shack or Best Buy.
Ill update my progress! -
To polish scratches, I use Brasso (or Silvero), a metal polish. It dulls the shine, but that doesn't inhibit readability that I notice. Don't hold the disc in your hand when polishing, it will flex and crack, put it on a hard flat surface and rub with a cloth in small circles. Wash with dishwashing liquid, rinse and dry.
As for software, IsoPuzzle is very good for reading and rereading till it gets all the data. -
I know there are programs that will supposedly rip bad DVDs & CDs, but I rent movies from Netflix and sometimes the discs are in very bad/unwatchable condition. I actually bought a CD Repair Machine on eBay. It cleans the discs as the machines that the game stores have. They usually look like new afterward. Here's what I bought, I am not affiliated with this company in any way, but if DVDs & CDs are a big thing for you as they are for me, it was well worth the money. If you have kids, it will save you much money. I bought it over 2 years ago and it still works like a new machine.

That's kind of an Oxymoron...
LOL!!
If i had something really bad, i would take it down to Family Video near my home and they charge like a buck or two and will put the dvd in a nice resurfacing machine for a minute or so and they come out looking like a brand new mirror!!
They don't use one of those cheap pieces of crap you buy offline or at best buy for $30.00.
