    Hi,

I've been trying to get some of my Panasonic DMZ-TZ3 MOV files to play in Windows Vista Media Center, but with not much success.

The audio plays fine, but there is no video.

GSpot can't recognise the video format of the MOV file, but mediainfo says it is "M-JPEG".

I got Haali and ffdshow installed, and when I try to play the MOV file, the Haali icon appears in the taskbar, but ffdshow doesn't.

I've opened ffdshow VFW and told it to to play MJPEG files using libavcodec, but it still doesn't work.

I've got Quicktime installed and the MOV files play fine in that with both audio and video. In Media Player, only the audio is played - no video.

Does anyone have any idea why this won't play?

    Any help much appreciated,

    Thanks

    eno

GSpot supports MOV (at least partially...).

Problem is probably a codec id (FourCC) - jpeg.

Open video in MPEG Streamclip and save to AVI (Save as... option, change file type to AVI (*.avi), change file extension).

Saved AVI file should be correct FourCC - MJPG.

    Thanks for your response Placio74.

My 'before' Gspot values are slightly different to yours.

Under Container, I don't get the "qt: Apple Quick Time (.MOV/QT)" line. My first line is the "File Type: Quick Time (.MOV)" line.

As you suggested, I used MPEG StreamClip to save as .avi, and GSpot now recognises it as MJPG. Also, the video plays fine in VMC.

However, in GSpot, in the "Proposed Codec Solutions and Test" section, yours says "ffdshow Video Decoder" but mine says "MJPEG Decompressor". If I select Item Details for "MJPEG Decompresser" it tells me that its 4CC is MJPG but that it is associated with quartz.dll. Does this mean I haven't set up ffdshow correctly to play avis?

Just to be clear though, I don't want to have to convert all my .MOV files to play in VMC - I want to play them directly, so I need to ensure I've got my codecs configured correctly.

    Thanks

Actually, quartz.dll decodes MJPEG better than ffdshow. You have to use ffdshow for decoding MJPEG video only with VfW applications like VirtualDub.

Possible. So I wrote earlier "at least partially"...
However, You have the same version? MOV and WMV support was added in 2.70a version.

    BTW
In MediaInfo Text view mode is more detailed.

Go to ffdshow video decoder configuration and check in Codecs tab.

Then try some 'wrapper' - for example Medialooks QuickTime DirectShow Source Filter or some similar, which uses QuickTime to decode (not DirectShow decoders).

I think problem is... ffdshow and system decoder (and I'm not sure about splitter) expected MJPG codec id and rather not support jpeg codec id.

Can sometimes be useful decoded by ffdshow, for example if You want to use advanced postprocessing when playing...

    BTW
VirtualDub has an internal decoder for MJPEG and DV.

    Hi again Placio74

I installed Medialooks QuickTime and now my MOV mjpeg files are playing in both Windows Media Player and Vista Media Center.

The only thing now is that the video appears to be more jittery than when I watch it in QuickTime itself.

Do you know how it can be made to play smoother?

Thanks very much so far for your help.

    Cheers

    eno
