    Hi Guys/Girls,

I have a question about ripping DVD that are 4:3 as it stands I am ripping my DVD collection to my cyclone HDD player all file are 16:9 and Im encoding using xvid bitrate of 1mb(ish) two pass encoding with a res of 624x352 I beleive this is what tv and dvd rips are done when the "Scene" groups release them, but what is the res for 4:3 dvd as I have a TV from the 70's and its in 4:3 and I would like to keep they way then "scene" do it as the quality is good

Does any one know what 4:3 rips should be?

    Cheers
    Patrick

  2. Forget the "scene" nonsense. Leave the frame size at 720x576. Then use the Xvid PAR/DAR flags to set the DAR to 16:9 or 4:3. See if your player obeys the flags. Doing this will preserve all the resolution.

If you really want (or need) to use square pixel encoding just use any 4:3 frame size ratio you want: 640x480, 576x432, 512x384, etc.

Tread lightly, because discussion of illegal downloads is forbidden here.

Anyway, 4:3 NTSC DVD is 720x480, but you can't rip at that resolution and get a 4:3 image because AVIs can't force an aspect ratio onto a resolution that doesn't match like AVIs can. To get 4:3, you either have to upscale slightly to 720x540 or go to a lower resolution.

But anyway, to get the results that you're looking for, just use AutoGK and use the pre-set file sizes: 700 MB for most movies, 350 MB for commercial hour long TV shows, and 175 MB for commercial half hour TV shows. It'll keep the proper aspect ratio.
