They used Lowry Digital for restoration. Same company which restored all of the Bond and Star Wars films.

Shame they couldn't find those original telemetry tapes with the unconverted raw video on them

    Cheers,

Didn't they find those tapes in a McDonalds store in Perth, Western Australia?

    From Wikipedia

On July 16, 2009 NASA held a media briefing where it released improved video footage from the live broadcast of the Apollo 11 moonwalk – some of which have been in storage for nearly 40 years. They concluded that the original tapes with the SSTV signal that had been shipped from Australia to Goddard were routinely erased and reused a few years later. A backup copy of the tapes that was made in Australia was also erased after Goddard received the tapes. There is documentation of two hours of the Apollo 11 moonwalk SSTV being recorded in Australia on a different format of tape, but these tapes have not been found. The primary reason that the SSTV signal was recorded on telemetry data tapes was in case of a failure of the real-time conversion and broadcast around the world. Since the real-time broadcast worked, the backup video was not deemed important.

Sorry to disappoint, but they aren't the missing Apollo 11 tapes. They are the tapes of footage taken as part of the Apollo 11 project, and contain high resolution aerial footage of lunar surface taken as part of the planning for the landing and the search for prospective landing sites.

You're probably right, guns1inger, but still... WTF were NASA tapes doing in a McDonalds store in Perth, West Australia????????

Don't get me wrong, I know the moon landings weren't a "hoax", BUT, I don't trust NASA one bit. They are ****-in-arse with CIA.

(PS: I should know, I'm from the Moon!)

The Star Wars can hardly be called a restoration as the colors were all screwed up with crushed blacks and a blue tint. Thank god the fan edit Star Wars Revisted has a meticulous color correction.
As for Bond, some of them looked good and others had cropped frames, darkened scenes or desaturated colors. Lowry has a lot of good tools but half the time, it seems they over do it and actually recolor the film. Or remove so much grain that it makes the film look like it was shot digitally.

Agreed. An acquaintance worked for them for a short period of time and described the experience. After the computer cleanup, there was a group of half a dozen Photoshop specialists whose task was to restore/fill in the scratches/imperfections on each separate frame. He lasted a month.

This site describes the Apollo video cameras used.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_TV_camera#Westinghouse_Apollo_Lunar_Television_Camera

The monochrome camera used for the Apollo moon shots was only a 320 line vidicon. The color camera used on later missions used a 262 line field sequential system 20 frames each R,G,B added to make 60 fps.

Yeah but why don't we get all the photos and videos instantly? Why "delays"? Why don't we get all the Japanese "Selene" mission photos? There's a HUGE conspiracy involving the moon (and it has nothing to do with humans NOT landing on the moon).

Evidence ? I mean real evidence, not supposition and the usual conspiracy nonsense. I mean actual documented proof from verifiable, reliable sources. Something that actually stands up to scrutiny.

Very good show. Probably the best they have done. I wish they would take on more serious topics from time to time.

Look fellas, all that Mythbusters show did was to prove that the CIA-fed disinformation-"myth" that "HUMANS DID NOT WALK ON THE MOON" was false!

And I agree! It is crank!

What I believe in is a secret space program that we don't know about. The "atomic bomb" was known about for more than 50 years before it exploded on Hiroshima and Nagasaki - and suddenly the public knew about it. The "stealth bomber" (eg U2/SR-71/etc) was TOP SECRET for DECADES before it was revealed to public scrutiny. When the SR-71 Blackbird was "revealed", oh, all of a sudden it was retired/obsolete!

I honestly believe/know that certain "agencies" are transporting themselves to secret Moon/Mars bases - and further - using top secret anti-gravity technologies.

Anti-gravity has been PROVEN by laboratory experiments in Russia and even New Zealand (not to mention NASA themselves). But it is kept quiet! University PhD physics is streamlined into "safe" avenues of research - eg "string theory" ha ha yeah right.

Our top-level governments know a lot more than they are letting on. WAKE UP, PEOPLE!

It's a bit OT, but I can't let this pass.

Considering that Niels Bohr developed his theory of atomic structure in 1913, I doubt much was known about the atomic bomb in 1895.

Don't start trying to use facts in an argument about conspiracies. Don't you know "they" changed the history so we would all be deceived ? You cannot trust anything that anyone says that does not agree with you already know. Anyone who does not think like you is a damned liar.

That crys out for a footnote or ten.

I guess I missed the anti-gravity breakthrough. I could use it to remove a tree and large boulder from my property.

So does your acquaintance work in video film restoration? That'd be something I'd be interested in doing. (I mean, I know I can't be any worse than Lowry)
And I should have linked this sooner but here's an example of the screwed up colors (and the fan edit that fixed them) from The Empire Strikes back I was talking about.

No, he's a 3D CGI artist. He did the Lowry gig because he didn't have another job at the time.

Lots of other companies and names in the article below. Robert A Harris is the industry's restoration guru. The studios trust him, so if they need a consultant to do the work they call Robert A Harris.

    http://www.theasc.com/magazine_dynamic/May2008/PostFocus/page1.php

If you want more consistent work, color correction specialists make a lot of dough. That entails working on movies to be released.
