    Hi Guys,

Sorry if this topic has been answered before.

    I need some advice.

I have a collection of about 50 MiniDV tapes and need to know what is the best format/software to convert these tapes to files. I need something with better compression that DV AVI, but at same time I don't want to sacrifice quality.

I have been using a HD camcorder (H 264 format) for a while now and love the convinience of playing the files directly from the Win Media Center library. I would like to create one file per MiniDV tape so I can easily access the content from within Media Center.

    Thank you,
    dgorini

    Hi,

    Thanks for posting this.

I am experimenting with HandBrake right now and it does the job even though it seems than I need to learn and experiment with de-interlacing.

One more question, I noticed that PowerDirector 8 can convert to AVCHD 720x480 and output a *.m2ts file. It converts faster than HandBrake and the video looks de-interlaced out of the box.

Which one would be a better solution ? PowerDirector AVCHD or HandBrake H264 ?

    Thanks again,
    dgorini

why in the world do you want to compress anything? hard drives are cheap...get a few.

I have done the same as you...just capture my DV via windv and save avi to hard drive. What could be easier?

This is not what this thread is about. Please don't tell me what I already know.

then capture one file to one tape. easy...I have already done this and have access to it on my media server. Do want you want, but encoding here is a waste of time IMO

  8. WMV 9(VC-1) @ 720x480/2.1Mbps would also work, it would also convert the fastest.
