hello,
I have been troubleshooting my capturing problem for awhile now, I don't know if it is a capturing problem or something ... I just bought a new Canon HV40, I started shooting on 1080/24p HDV format... So when I capture with my new premiere pro CS4, then I play it back on the preview window, well it plays back choppy... I know my camera records native 24p so I don't have to do any conversion or pull-downs and I already set-up my sequence to be 1080p 24, I should be playing back smoothly.., but it aint...
So I tried playing back the digitized footage with windows media player and it plays back fine!!!! So What the heck is going on here I said to myself... I have a canon sd780 that records 720/30p, so I opened up a new project with the 720/30p sequence then I threw footage on the preview window and the timeline, again it plays back choppy... what is going on here? I just got sorenson squeeze, I still have not use it to capture but I will try that this weekend...
Can some guru here help me, pls![]()

have you tried right clicking on the HDV files and "interpreting footage as" and then selecting 24p? pp cs4 most likely thinks it's 30i or even worse the old format 24p in a 30i stream.
have you considered shooting 30p instead? 24p is really too slow for anything but a tripod and set shots. unless of course you're a director and know this...--

Yes, I tried that and when I set up Premiere CS4 it is on 1080/24p. When I interpret the files it does tell me its' a 1080/24p so it does conform to my project and my HDV recordin'....
I have not tried shooting on 1080/30p yet, but I will try that tonight... The reason for the 1080/24p is to get that film-look happening, film speed is 24p... And yes, I am the director and I know it was shot in 1080/24p... the shots and scene where shot on a tripod, a few on a jib and a few on a poorman's steadicambut I am new to this low-budget camera, the Canon HV20's... so I knew the shot was on 24p because I sent one up on one of the shoot my cameraman was freaking late
thank you for responding -
can you upload a test file of the native 24p for me to look at? i can handle the old hv20/30 24p in a 30i stream fine, but since i only have a hv30 i can't help with the new 24p without a sample.
any file sharing site would be ok.
i always shoot 30p, it's a good compromise for dvd and online video.--

Yes, I will try to upload some files online, I am going to do some test shots with the various flavor of this HD40 and see what's up..., but you really think its the footage? I did mentioned that I played it back on a Windows Media player and it played fine....
I also gone done installing Sorenson Squeeze to my laptop and the footage is fine too, I was even able to make it DV NTSC no problem... I am having serious doubts on my laptop on editing in HD or HDV... Most of the stuff I do is DV 4:3 NTSC.., DV Widescreen for music videos... Using the using the old Canon XL1s... and here I am switching to HDV... what a nightmare lol
ok... I will see about the uploads but i doubt its that now... after being able to play it back on sorenson squeeze software... -
you may be right, if the laptop isn't fast enough it could be causing the bad playback. pp cs4 is a bit of a resource hog by itself, and trying to playback at hdv at the same time may be too much for it. start the task manager, control-alt-delete and watch how much cpu is being used. hdv isn't nearly as bad as avchd but it needs more horsepower than dv.
