I have some mpeg1 files and I would like to create new files so they play in reverse.
    what tools?

i'm using mpeg vcr to edit/join and the 'reverse' i do in avisynth and virtualdub, then encode to mpeg1.
    is this correct?

Yep. But you can't export to mpeg1 directly in virtualdub, but you could frameserve to for example tmpgenc. Or try open the avs directly in tmpgenc , tmpgenc xpress or other mpeg1 encoders.

Since you have to reencode, unless you particularly need MPEG1 (for VCD?), why not save to AVI or another more modern format? VDub can do that easily.

  4. You can just use AviSynth's Reverse() function and feed the script directly to your MPEG encoder.

  5. And another option is avidemux which has a reverse filter, and can encode to many different formats as well
