    Hi,

is there any major risks with regards to registering on a site that requires information like your address but is done over an unsecure connection? banking and CC details are not required...

i guess the question is what can hackers do with names, addresses and phone numbers that would make a person concerned about entering these details over an unsecure site?

On it's own it might be enough to bluff further information from someone over the phone. It is also just another step towards stealing your identity. They can start with your name and address, then they get a little more from your facebook or myspace page, a little more from your flickr photos, and pretty soon they have credit cards in your name.

Or it might all be legit.

Keep in mind when you connect via SSL that only means the data is encrypted by your browser before being sent to the server so if it's intercepted during transit by a third party it cannot be read. Once it gets to the server what happens to it depends but it's usually not stored encrypted because the key to decrypt has to exist somewhere.

There might be certain situations where that is not the case, passwords for example where the password is the key to decrypt the password. :P
