  1. Hi,

I'm still working on my project of mixing several music videos, for the video it's not ok, but for the audio, the songs all have a different volume.

What's the best method to get an average volume for all tracks ??? Normalize ? (at how much db ??) Dynamic compression ????

Sources varies from AC3, MP2, LPCM,... so I will convert all to Wav files then adapt the volume and the target will be either lpcm or ac3.

  2. What software are you using for your project?

Normalize() in avisynth will automatically increase db without clipping. You could do this with soundout() for example, and even batch scripting if you have a lot of tracks

    Audacity (free) also has normalize

  3. I would use Audacity with the Amplify effect, this way it won't clip.
Amplify one audio track at a time instead of all at once, I recommend a setting of -1.

  4. I use SoundForge 8, I can use Normalize (maximize peak value, rms,...) or Dynamic compression

what's the best to use with soundforge ?

  5. If you want each track to be similar you would normalize to average rms level and pick a value like -6 (it's not recommended to go above)

Normalizing each track to peak would cause each track to be different

Recommendation way too high! Bring the Average RMS down to -15 db.

Matters of great concern should be taken lightly.
Matters of small concern should be taken seriously.
