  1. I've tried a couple of times to back up my copy of Into The Blue. Every time I got a DVD that wouldn't play in my DVD player. The player stays stuck on 00:00:00, chapter -- of --. No button on the remote makes any difference.

Mac The Ripper gives the error message "can't read title set".

My computer will play it. It won't play normally but if I hit the MENU button a couple of times it eventually gets to the start of the movie.

I have a couple of questions, I guess.
    • what's going on with this particular DVD?
    • I don't need the menus, extras, anything like that, I just like to put the DVD in and have the movie start. And whatever's the problem with this DVD, it seems like it's with the menu, not with the VOB files, because it plays OK on a computer.
    • So, can't I just replace the IFO and BUP files with a default, generic file, which just says "go to VIDEO_TS.VOB, then VTS_01_0.VOB, VTS_01_1.VOB" and so on? Presumably this is what ripping software does when it cuts out all the menus and extras and just gives you the feature, so it must be possible.

Rip only the VOBs of the title set for the main movie (use dvddecrypter or dvdfab decrypter) .... open ifoedit ... click 'create new ifo's'... load in the first vob of the set you just ripped (make sure that they are named VTS_01_x (if they aren't rename them before doing this step) .... set the output folder to same as source ... hit the ok button .... when finished close ifoedit and then reopen it (it is important that you do close it and reopen it) click open and load the new Video_ts file that was created in the previous step ... click 'get vts sectors' ... keep clicking ok until all is done .... burn the dvd with your normal burning software ... play and enjoy

Will all those programs run on a MAC ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

  5. Yes, perhaps it wasn't clear that I'm on Mac.

Is there a similar program which can make me an IFO on Mac?

Oops ... i didn't realise the original poster was using a mac (although i should have ... as the clue was in ... "mac the ripper gives the error..... "). so forget the method i suggested as those utilities won't work on a mac.

As i have never used a mac i am unable to suggest a method for your problem ..... any mac users know how to do it ???

  7. You could use tocgen <mywebpages.comcast.net/galactica/Archive.sit>

Put all your VTS_**_*.*** files in a new folder named VIDEO_TS. Run tocgen on that folder and it will create the necessary files for you.

If you're unsure where to put the tocgen executable you can just open a Terminal window and type:

cd <drag the folder named Archive that you downloaded/expanded)

(i.e. cd-space-dragged folder) and hit Enter.

    Now type,

    ./tocgen <drag the VIDEO_TS folder you made earlier>

    (i.e ./tocgen-space-<dragged folder>)

    and hit Enter.

You first need to follow the advice of this thread, which
explains which tools you will need to upgrade.
This question comes up all the time on the mac side:

How 2 deal with Dummy VOB padding on a DVD i'm trying to rip

Any further questions, Please post them in the Mac Forum, I or someone will
be glad to help you further.

Thanks for that. There's a tocgen and an ifogen in that archive, I notice. I just need tocgen?

And I realise this question is now Mac-specific, but it wasn't when I started.

I'm still confused as to why I couldn't keep a standard set of IFO files which just say "play all VOB files in order". IFO files are still a mystery to me. They contain other things than just lists of files, obviously, things like chapter and time info?

  11. With MTR 2.66 you should do a full disc extraction only. Then use either DETOX or toast 7 to pull out the main feature only (if all you want is the main feature).

MTR 3.0 R12 does a good job with main feature only, but R13 you are back to full disc.

  13. Yes there is a beta release out R13, there are some issues but overall it works well.

This was a great help to me. I just found this post, I have a dvd with some of the extra VOB files are messed up and my drive won't read or decode them. I was looking to rebuild or create blank IFO's and VOB's but with this post I didn't need to because I had the main movie files. I used IFO Edit to create the missing files, Nero and ImageBurn to make a DVD-R. Thanks.
