hi.
i have ripped versions of certain dvds (using mac the ripper 3).
i take the video_ts file and drop it in "from" box of ffmpegx.
when i click "encode" the program encodes 1-3 seconds of the movie, but not all of it.
this happens around 50% of the time (the other 50% works fine).
any reason why this is? any fix or workaround?
cheers,
gcm

I'm with Herve....if you aren't just using MTR 3 to rip MAIN FEATURE
only rips, you'll get this because your VOBs are including ALOT
of wasted stuff you don't need.
You should be:
1. Using MTR 3 to rip to MAIN FEATURE from your disc.
2. Taking that Main Feature rip into DVD2ONEX to fix
the disc structure, esp. on anything made by Sony or Disney
so that you have a clean, correct VIDEO_TS folder.
(no blank cells, squirrley ArCCoss mapping, etc.)
3. THEN, use that corrected folder to push through ffmpegx, handbrake,
visualhub, etc. to your end format ( ipod mp4, etc.)"Everyone has to learn, so that they can one day teach."

Urban Mac User -
hi guys.
thanks for the tips. i downloaded dvd2onex. i tried loading the video_ts folder into it and the program kept on crashing.
any ideas as to why this is?
now that i am writing this, i recall that mac the ripper indicated that certain cds had "bad sectors". not sure what that means or why that is.
thoughts are most welcome. -
on another note....
i use mac the ripper 3 to rip my dvds.
with some movies, when i drag and drop the video_ts folder into the "from" field, it appears that ffmpegx freezes trying to load the video. basically, it gets stuck with the pointer and the "+" sign (like it is trying to add the movie, but can't).
i have to force quit ffmpegx and then restart it in order to move on to another file and i get stuck with movies i can't convert.
is there a fix to this or a workaround?
thanks,

Those movie it is "freezing" upon have bad sectors, arCCoss encrytpion,
and puppetlock anti protection most likely.
You have to POST PROCESS these video TS folders with an app
like DVD2ONEX.
IF DVD2ONEX isn't launching on your system, chances are the original
rips are bad.
So let's start at the beginning:
1. What version of MTR? the latest is v. 3.0r14
2. When you are ripping these DVDs, are you ripping Full Disc,
Main Feature, or Title Set ?
3. When after ripping in MTR, are you test playing the output in Apple's
DVD Player or VLC to verify you are getting a good rip?
4. if you are getting a bad rip, verified by following step #3,
what is the age of your DVD Drive in your mac?
let's start there and then we'll proceed..."Everyone has to learn, so that they can one day teach."

"Bad Sectors" can mean many things. It could mean any of the following,
check to rule these out:
1. The disc is scratched or heavily damaged where reading it correctly may be impossible.
(Clean the disc using a drop of liquid dishwashing soap [Dawn is a personal favorite], and cool water.
Rinse and wipe dry with
a lint free cloth, wiping from center to outer edge, straight not in circles)
2. The DVD Drive may be too old, and the laser is having trouble reading
the disc. (Try to rip the disc on another computer , or use an external
drive hooked up to the computer to rip the disc from)
Also, your message "mirror of dvd main feature failed" points to the
fact that you might have been trying to back up an incorrect Main Feature.
Many companies put in fake info in the Disc's IFO as to which
title is the Main Feature to fool MTR to keep it from ripping
a disc.
To get around this, first, play the DVD on The Mac using Apple's DVD Player.
PLAY CLOSE ATTENTION to the Title # DVD Player references when playing back the Main Feature.
Then, close it and go back to MTR.
When Ripping this time, choose Title Set Rip, and select the
Title that DVD Player was playing, and rip that. You then should
be able to get a good rip that way."Everyone has to learn, so that they can one day teach."

thanks for the tips.
so:
- disk is not scratched or damaged
- dvd drive is new (less than 6 mo old)
when i try to rip the main feature only with mtr, mtr often closes unexpectedly.
other times, it rips a file that when i convert, is about 2 secs.
so, it may be that i am not ripping the right file as you say.
when i play the dvd my mac, where do i have to go to see the title number (as you indicate)? it seems i just see the #s as they would appear on a standard dvd player... -
ok, so the problem is definately from the rip.
2 major pbms occur with mtr:
a. complete crash of mtr (both for full disk extraction and main feautre extraction)
b. report at the end indicating bad sectors (both for full disk extraction and main feature extraction)
i tried to use iskysoft dvd ripper to see the outcome. turns out that on these same dvds, the ifo files can not load.
look forward to hearing back from you on this and seeing how to identify the title # dvd reference on the main feature. -
