I need advice for my new hdd. I will install the os & progs only on it that's for video montage.Ideally i wanna get what was best 1-2 years ago but i will not put more than 50€. Size should be small about 80-100gb that's more than enough i believe.Sata1 interface (sata2 why not) and 10000rpm is welcomed or 7200rpm.1 platter only as it seems to be a key thing for speed & silence.
Your inputs are welcome

I would probably consider a 7200RPM HDD. 80GB is probably sufficient for a boot drive, but a larger boot can be used for archival storage. It depends on what bargains you can find. The 10K+ drives aren't really needed for most video and you will only get a small speed increase as a boot drive, depending on your SATA controller. Your boot drive can be small, but if you plan to do video, you want a second and maybe third HDD, usually much larger. The boot drive is accessed often by the OS. Not great for good performance.
SATA 2 is usually a better choice for any SATA drive, even if your SATA controller is slower. I prefer WD HDDs at present, JMO. -
I think i will get a similar hdd than i have currently : a Samsung SpinPoint.
The one i have worked (and still) for 3 years wonderfully. The quantity of videos, mp3, a few os reinstallations, video montages this big guy ate has been incredible i must say.
I can't seem to find a small capacity hdd at a reasonable price and with a good cache (ideally 32mb). Plus i don't wanna defrag constantly the drive just because it's small so i'll a go for this one.My choice is not definitive but close.
If i compare with something like this it makes no sense to get this smaller hdd.
It's smaller yet it consume more power, latency is the same so go figure...*** DIGITIZING VHS / ANALOG VIDEOS SINCE 2001**** GEAR: JVC HR-S7700MS, TOSHIBA V733EF AND MORE -
The newer Samsung drives seem to have good specifications. Probably a good choice.
I wouldn't worry too much about power consumption, not really a large factor for drive selection. If defragging is a concern, you can always partition a larger drive to one smaller boot partition and use the second partition for archival storage. That won't affect encoding or editing speed if you use a secondary HDD for those type of operations.
