  1. I have read many posts on the subject, but none of them have addressed which DMA mode should be selected. The main reason for this is most likely the fact that most people change the DMA mode via the Device Manager and the "Properties" of the IDE channels. However, I am using the method of changing the DMA mode via "setup" (in Win2k). You know, when the computer boots up, you hit F10, and it goes into "Setup".

In any respect, let me first tell you what my IDE channels look like:

    Primary IDE Channel:

    Master: WD 40gig 7200rpm HD running Win2k
    Slave: Plextor 16X burner

    Secondary IDE Channel:

Master: IBM 60 GXP 60 gig 7200rpm Deskstar
    Slave: Toshiba SD-M1612

I don't want to set the DVD-ROM as the master because I want to have the secondary HD with the fastest speed for rendering video.

    I have the latest ASPI layers (v. 4.60 (1021))
(For some reason, I can't play my DVD's with PowerDVD. DirectDraw Overlay is unavailable. I have a 3dfx Voodoo3-1000 card. I tried updating to the latest drivers, but to no avail. This is not related, but I figured I'd let it be known in case it mattered.)

With respect to the IDE drivers, I don't know which version I have, and I have no clue how to update them. I also don't know what VIA is (referred to in other posts).

Well, here are the choices for the modes that are available in setup:

    Possible settings for Transfer Mode:

    Standard
    FPIO 4/DMA 2
    FPIO 3/DMA 1
    FAST PIO 4
    FAST PIO 3
    FAST PIO 2
    FAST PIO 1

Possible settings for Ultra DMA Mode:

    Mode 0
    Mode 1
    Mode 2
    Mode 3
    Mode 4

I tried setting it to AUTO so it would detect the settings automatically, but it did not set the DVD to DMA mode automatically.

Here the computer setup that I have:

    AMD Athlon K-7 500MHz
    384MB RAM

It is ripping at speeds between 1.5x and 3x. On average, it is taking about 35 min. to rip. I know I should be able to rip faster.

Please advise on the DMA settings that I should have for each drive, and any other suggestions that you might have.

  2. hi,

try diffrent dma setting. but that should not matter i belive. try to install the latest aspi 4.7 from adptec.com. yes they have ta new release and also you did not mention what brand is your drive. i happend to have three diffrent brand of same read speed 16x but only pioneer seems to rip at higher speed up to 9 x max other maxed 4 x. so i belive it depends on the drive brand tooo

  4. Actually, I did mention what kind of DVD drive I have. It was listed under the Slave Drive of the Secondary IDE channel. It's a Toshiba SD-M1612. I know that everyone says that Toshibas don't rip very fast, but it is not in DMA mode, and I just figured it would rip faster if I put it in that mode. However, there are many choices for the DMA mode, and I was wondering which one (refer to my original post above) I should use.

    If anyone knows, please...do tell.

  5. try fast pio4/dma2 transfer mode. i'd say the udma mode is irrelevant for the drive

  6. Thanx. I actually changed it to DMA mode via Device Manager. I haven't had time to check in the setup what mode it actually set it at.

By the way, I was wrong. My DVD drive was setup as the slave on my Primary IDE Channel. So I swapped it with my burner, and is now the slave on my Secondary IDE Channel, and the ripping speed went from a lousy 1.9X, to 3.8X - 4.8X! Not bad for a Toshiba!

  7. Primary or Secondary controllers shouldnīt make difference!
Differences exist if Master / Slave! Master can be about 30% faster than Slave.

I have a DVD-ROM from ASUS 16x ATA100. It is in Secondary Master UDMA 100.

I can get speeds about 5x-13x. I can rip an entire DVD (single layer) in +-10 minutes

PS: REMEMBER THAT YOU CANīT COMPARE RIPPING with SINGLE LAYER / DUAL LAYER!!! SINGLE LAYER IS ABOUT 15-30% faster in ripping. (this is what litterature says, with my asus I didnīt noticed differences above 5-10%)
