Hello,
I need to test mp4 video file, which I encoded for iPhone. I have no PSP at the moment and I would appreciate if someone could help me to test this video file on PSP.
rapidshare.com/files/284915706/psptest.mp4
(2 minutes transformers2 trailer)
One more question: can this mp4 video, which I encoded for BlackBerry, also be played on iPod or iPod Nano?
rapidshare.com/files/285618949/blackberrytest.mp4
Thank you all in advance
Timo

I use Xilisoft media converter and these are the file specs, used by this software:
Output #0, mp4, to 'C:\Users\Documents\iPhone\PSPTest.mp4':

I think you are pushing things here. PSP has a resolution of 480x272, while this video is encoded with 480x320. In addition, using 30 FPS could make things even worse.
Try changing resolution to 480x272 with 24 FPS (if your source video is widescreen, 16:9 aspect ratio), or 368x272 with 24 FPS (if your source video has normal , 4:3 aspect ratio). -
You won't find a happy medium for PSP and Ipod. This has been discussed here and on other forums before
PSP uses CABAC, Ipod uses CAVLC. You would think PSP could play the less complex CAVLC encoded videos, but this is not the case. So the answer is no, that file won't play on PSP -
Hello Usta,
Thank you for the replay. I understand, but I want to publish some clips on my website, I want to make the videos viewable for PSP and on iPhone. More formats means more disk space, so I am just trying to find a compromise between this both formats.
I will also offer another video which is supposed to play on older blackberries and some other mobile phones. It is mp4 video encoded with mp4 codec with 15 FPS: rapidshare.com/files/285618949/blackberrytest.mp4
Output #0, mp4, to ' blackberrytest.mp4':
Stream #0.0: Video: mpeg4, yuv420p, 320x240, q=2-31, 580 kb/s, 15.00 fps(c)
Stream #0.1: Audio: libfaac, 44100 Hz, stereo, 64 kb/s
So some people on PSP, which have old firmware installed and some iPod users can play it too. -
Hi Poisondeathray,
Don’t tell it for sure before you tested it. I think that Sony keeps on updating a firmware on PSP (iTunes videos is a huge market - that’s why) , so that it can be played on PSP with new firmware versions….
It may have been discussed on this and other forums before, even last month, but the developers don’t keep staying and always move on…. -
If the idea is to make videos compatible both for PSP and IPOD, you can release the encoding restrictions by un-checking CABAC (which is the case in the Mediainfo output).
Another idea is to select a more simple video codec: both PSP and IPOD can work with MPEG4 (A)SP profile (no H264).
The output files will be bigger, but you will get more compatibility.
The video encoded for Blackberry is an example of using a "more compatible" codec (I'm not sure though, how the 15fps will look like on PSP or Ipod...)
Here is another tip: get a all in one converter with a lot of presets, like Format Factory and check the defined presets they have for Ipod, PSP or Blackberry. By experimenting with those, you should be able to find an acceptable balance.
