Nothing new since July 17. Am I missing something? 'Guess I'll have to do my own shopping from now on.

  4. I've sort of switched to CLI because of this. Got to make use of mbtree and speed improvements.

The mbtree feature is interesting. Did Dark Shikari really implement it by himself? Kid must be on new meds...

I guess H.265 will have a lot of competition now, since its "20% gain" over H.264 is now flushed down the shitter.

Anyway, looks like it's been a month since mbtree's inception, does anyone know if it's finalized? 'Cuz I'm not using it if it won't play back a month later. I might even ditch AVI for good.

Either way, this is a testament of future, intelligent video codecs and the ******* awesome era yet to come. Finally, a codec looks at objects and can discern backgrounds from active objects. I've always visualized mystical shit like this, but hell, anyone can talk.

  6. It's in the main x264 trunk now, so in a sense it is finalized.

But have a look at the mbtree thread on Doom9. It still has some major issues, especially with fades. Some upcoming improvements like weighted p are supposed to help

I already knew about the problem with fades (had to cut em all out in my videos before I could do real testing.) My only issue is whether current x264 builds with mb-tree will be playable in the future.

Also, what qcomp value should I use? I always use 0.7, and I'm thinking 1.0 would nullify mb-tree entirely. I did try 0 which boosted SSIM from 0.99000 to 0.99150 but upon looking at the frames and noticing everything that moves in the slightest looks garbage... I decided to stick with 0.7, and knowing I can't rely on SSIM, you think it's wiser to use something slightly lower?

  8. IMO cutting out fades is not realistic, but it might be for your specific purposes...

mb-tree does nothing to affect "playability" or decoding, it only affects rate control - so you are safe

As for what settings: it sounds retarded, but use your eyes. Who cares what some metric says, the bottom line is if you think it looks better. Also that value you figure out is "best" might not be ideal for other sources.

But my eyes trip balls and lie to me. Hell, all my senses are pretty much. But whatever, I'll try.
