I wonder if anyone had this issue with a online retailer. I tried to purchase a diabetic medication from Canadian drug dispenser. When I found out the drug was coming from someplace in South America, I cancelled the order. Nevertheless this company sent the medication to my work place, so I sent I sent the unopened package right back to the originator in Argentina. American Express in the mean time asked the Canadian retailer to produce disputed evidence of purchase but they never produced it so the merchandise was never paid.

In the mean time, this Canadian retailer sold off my account as an unpaid balance to some credit investigator /debt collector out of New York .(I live in California.)

    My question:

    1. Does any out of state collection agency have authority in my state? I would be making a complaint with California Consumer Affairs it happened to be licensed in California.

    2. Do these collection agency have any authority to effect my credit rating with TransUnion/Equifax.

Any insight into the situation is appreciate it.

Why did you send the package to Argentina instead of Canada?
And always ask where the drug is made, even if purchased from Canada.

^ Thanks for your reply. I really had a misgiving about asking some unrelated subject matter on Video Forum because there’s a possibility that you not going to get the answer.

As for the former question, I hope you will reread what I have written.

As for the latter comment, I hope people will entertain the possibility that not everyone is a dunce. There maybe a possibility that a company misinformed or lied.

Debt collection agencys can collect on debts from other states afaik. It's happend to me before.

Yes. But you can dispute whatever info they try to place on your credit report. I would check all three major credit reporting agencies for any info that is inaccurate.

^Thank you for your insight. I’m always careful about online purchases; I only purchase from large established retailers like Amazon and Newegg if I could help it. Additionally, I check with Resellerratings.com when I’m not sure.

Only other time I got ripped off was on eBay, buying an old junk Betamax. I eventually got some the some of the money back by going through some unwieldy administrative process that eBay had. I first had to hire an adjudicator and a year of wasted time to get it everything straightened out, not including the cost of frustration for its drawn out process.
