Hi, I have been surfing around the interbutts for at least a week now trying to find a solution to this.

I want to convert mkv files into a format my dvdplayer actually can play, say, avi or divx. Having a mac is actually a handicap here, since there doesn't seem to be that many programs being able to do this. I have tried a dozen of different programs, each of them failing. Handbrake seemed to be the best, but it keeps crashing on me whenever I try to convert. I actually managed to convert one film but not the rest. I recently got a hold of divx converter, but it seems that it can't support mkv files, only convert them into it. I'm looking for a freeware. It seems I have tried eveything now, help please?

Nobody who has a Mac likes to hear this, but the reality is that even though Windows sucks, it has all the tools. Macs have usually 1 or 2 tools to do anything and if they don't work, you are out of luck.

Try this. Download the Divx codec from http://www.divx.com. You can try it for free for some days. Then go here
    http://labs.divx.com/DrDivXDownload
and load Dr. Divx for Mac. Try using it to encode and see if it works for you. I don't encode to Divx a lot on my PC, but when I do, I use Dr. Divx.

Handbrake works really well - when it works. I've seen posts like yours that say that it keeps crashing on certain files and I've never seen a solution for it.

Divx Converter sucks because it won't let you set any encoding options. I don't recommend using it.
