  1. This was my first attempt at making an XVCD and I still can't get it to work, despite reading all the FAQs and searching this forum, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I got an avi file from the net, I used TMPGenc to encode it to an XVCD file, which was about 1.4 Gb. I then used TMPGenc to split this into two files of 741Mb and 735Mb. All going well so far.

Now I've tried to use Nero 5.5.5 to burn it, but when I try to it says that the medium I am using is too small (80 min 700Mb CDR or 74 min 650Mb CDRW, I've tried both) and refuses to do it.

Ok I thought, I'll try and use VCDeasy, I've managed to get it to create me a bin file and a cue file, I then loaded these into Fireburner (using the fireburner cue file), and tried to burn it with that. All I keep getting is this error message:

    Recording device: _NEC NR-7700A

    Recording method: Session-at-once

    Recording Speed: Max

    Blah, blah, blah....

    Thread1: Sending Cue Sheet

    Thread1: Error sending cue sheet

    Thread1: Sense Error: ILLEGAL_REQUEST (INVALID FIELD IN PARAMETER LIST) (0x05 0x26 0x00)

    Recording aborted due to error

Any one have any ideas why this isn't working, I know that my burner and CDRs can handle large files like this, cos I've successfully burnt some large SVCDs from bins with fireburner. I don't understand why Nero has such a problem with this, any suggestions?

    Cheers

  2. Firstly, have you tried remultiplexing your MPEG files (the now cut ones) with TMPGEnc on the setting: "MPEG-1 Video-CD (non-standard)".

Secondly, if you are using VCDImager +/- GUI and are trying to burn a CUE/BIN images, try this: http://www.geocities.com/medinotes/vcd/burning_cuebin_images.html

  3. what do you mean by remultiplexing it, do you mean running it through TMPenc again the same as I did before? Why will this help?(I'm sorry but I'm quite new to this!)

When I first ran TMPGenc I used the non-standard option to get XVCDs, do I still need to do it again?

    Cheers

  4. I'm not telling you to re-encode it. I'm telling you to remultiplex it (File --> MPEG Tools --> Multiplex). It should take a couple of minutes.

This is because the MPEGs as used on a VCD aren't just any MPEGs. They must be multiplexed and packed in a very specific way as well. If you used an XVCD template (and then cut the video), the multiplexing will probably be wrong and the pack size definitely wrong.

By remultiplexing the MPEG, it is putting the MPEG data back in the way Nero expects of VCD compliant files. The pack size for a VCD standard MPEG is the same as the sector size on the physical disc. If it isn't the same, Nero will try to "pad" the file with null data to make it fit. This will lead to an increase in file size.

Remultiplexing removes this problem for XVCDs.

  5. excellent, that seems to be working fine, thanks for the help.

That info could do with being included in the VCDhelp guide couldn't it?
