Well, it didn't take too long for a modified region free Oppo to surface. I think that crtprojectors has a hardware and sofware mod to make the Oppo blu ray region free.

I contacted HKFlix to see if they planned on releasing a modified player a few weeks ago. Their reply was simply that Oppo made it very difficult and that it may never be possible. Reading between the lines, it seems that they aren't interested in modding the Oppo.

Does anyone know of a US company that has a modified Oppo blu ray player? Has anyone had any experience with crtprojectors in the UK? Are they a good company?

crtprojectors.co.uk will also start shipping the diy hardware mod kit to the US starting next week some time. There are a couple of different kits at different prices depending on where it is being shipped in Europe, but even the most expensive one is about $100. The mod kit doesn't require any soldering and comes with installation instructions. To change regions for blu ray you need to enter a code, like on the Momitsu, after the mod is done. Here is a detailed link about the hardware mod: http://www.avforums.com/forums/blu-ray-players/1020033-oppo-bdp-83-region-free-thread.html

I found a couple of places in the US that have modified Oppo players and they are around $1000. One of them even needed to be turned off and then you had to enter some codes to change the region.

So the crtprojector mod kit seems to be the best option. Like I said before there is a software mod that works if you check this link: http://www.codefreedvd.com/dvd_oppo_bdp83_multiregion_firmware.html
It is free, but who knows how long it will work.
