I live in Europe. My question is: do I use the same instructions to unlock codes as if I were in the US? All the hack advice I've seen has related to Region 1.

Generally, most of those hacks convert the player to 'Region 0', or basically all regions, and should work the same anywhere. But you might mention the specific player you are asking about and someone here may have better information. Since I assume you are in 'PAL' land, you should be aware that regions and PAL/NTSC formats aren't the same thing and you may only be able to play other formats if the player already allows it.

    And welcome to our forums.

Many thanks for the prompt reply. My dvd player is a JVC MH30 but it seems that there is no information about that model so I thought I'd buy another cheap player just to use with US dvds. Can you recommend one?

For 'cheap', the Philips models are popular. If the JVC doesn't play Divx videos, then then something like the Philips that do may be a plus. For US NTSC DVDs, you would also need to convert it to Region 0.

Sorry I haven't replied earlier, Redwudz, believe it or not I've only just seen this reply. Thanks for the info.

I wonder if you could help me with two more problems.

    1. Although I follow instructions to the letter when finalising dvds, it hasn't been possible to view them again not even when I try to play them on the JVC recorder I recorded them on. What's gone wrong?

    2. Is it possible to record onto the hard drive items recorded on cable?

Maybe you are using bad media. Verbatim (everything but the Life series) and Taiyo Yuden are the best. Sony may be OK in Europe. I'm not sure. In the past Sony used high quality manufacturers for European media, but I don't know if they still do. TDK may also be OK in Europe for the same reason as Sony, but again, I'm not sure who they use now as a manufacturer.

I don't understand your 2nd question. Are you not able to record from cable to the hard drive in the recorder?
