This gaming console, defeated eight years ago by the PlayStation 2, has a new life.
Huh... i still have my original Dreamcast hooked up and i still love playing it on my 54".
I have 150 games for it and it still works great!!
I remember having games for the DC that were not available for the PS2 that were great games!!
They are now but at the time they were not.

I always thought it was too bad it died so fast...

HELL YEAH! The Dreamcast is still fun as hell!

The only thing is that I have to haul out the big tube tv once in a while for the light gun games. Well worth it, though. 8)

It was too soon. Then Sony came and kicked everyones ass in the 128bit gen console.

Microsoft had the right idea with xbox live and was able to truly capitilize on it with the 360. That is why the 360 is doing very well.

Dreamcast was ok but it was too much too soon. Like I said Sony came in and wiped the floor with the ps2. If the dreamcast had had a dvd drive in it it may have had a chance at surviving.

Personally I wouldn't be suprised if Sega eventually tries to go back to hardware. However with the Wii dominating and the ps3 struggling the market isn't quite ready for a forth competitor.

I kind of put them in like the NHL in the US. Its the "forth" major sports behind NBA, NFL, and the MLB. But its really a niche market. Its not big enough to contend with the established regulars.
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

It wasn't the PS2 that killed the DC. It was the rampant piracy, due to the DC having virtually no built-in DRM. While you can hack most systems with warranty voiding, soldered mods, the DC could play "backups" straight out of the market.

That's the story of Sega's life.

Sega Master System - NES killed it

Sega Genesis - Super Nintendo won

    Sega Saturn - Sony Playstation

    Sega Dreamcast - PS2.

Don't forget the add ons - 32x and Sega CD, plus the hand held Game Gear.

I still have my Genesis, Game Gear, and Dreamcast. The Game Gear has a cracked screen, and many dead pixels, so it's in a box with other broken electronic items I refuse to throw away.

I'd say that was the main reason, more than the PS2. The other Sega systems still competed, the DC just went belly up.

Jet Grind Radio is one of my favorite DC games.

I don't think SNES "won" as much as Genesis tried to compete with NES. "Better graphics" just did not win in those days -- it was all about gameplay.

Given the two, I'd have thought Genesis came out ahead of SNES, but SNES lasted years long while Sega f'd around with Nomad, 32X, SegaCD, Saturn and other gimmicks.

I have two Game Gears, and even the now-useless analog tuner card. It never worked well anyway (the tuner). I still prefer my NeoGeo Pocket to other handhelds. Turbo Xpress was nice too, though I never owned it.

Back in those days, CD burners were not as common, and blank discs were still several dollars each. Burners costs hundreds. So I don't know piracy had much to do with it, aside from underground sellers of PS1 and DC games. Many times, the cheap Chinese discs they used (as you bought from Hong Kong) didn't work anyway, or would skip a lot. You quit buying $5 fakes after wasting money or crap duds. (I know several people who did it. I never owned a DC.)

Actually, in 2000-2001, burners could be had for less than $100, while discs were well under $1. I know many people who prated the hell out of the DC, and they didn't have two nickels to rub together. I even put together several $300 systems for people, and cheap burners were the key to the low price and desirability.

I can remember buying a Creative Labs Blaster something or another 8x CD Burner for ~$100 in 2000. It was an 8x4x32x model. Blanks were ~$1.50 - $0.50. Beats the $400 2x burner and $15 blank CD price from 1994

The Genesis never competed against the NES. <--From Sega's stand point. In the retail space yes --> Sega already had their asses handed to them by the NES, they were focused on 16bit gaming and the Turbo Grafix-16 with the Genesis. The Genesis had some fan fare, but all was lost, once again, after Nintendo brought out the SuperNES.

I had the entire Sega history posted, but I've decided to just link to Wikipedia. They have some info I forget to mention

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Genesis
It was a direct competitor of the TurboGrafx-16 (which was released one year earlier in Japan under the name PC Engine, but at about the same time as the Genesis in North America) and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (which was released two years later).
In the European market, this console launched Sega onto a competitive level comparable to Nintendo, due to its wider availability, but failed to put a dent in the North American and Japanese markets. The Master System was released as a direct competitor to the NES/Famicom. Despite its shaky performance in the major territories, it enjoyed over a decade of life in smaller markets.

Why would you have to do that ??

I play house of the dead 2 & other games on my 54" all the time.
It's a rear projection flat screen.

I would imagine they would work on any tv although i never tried on anything else.....

    Yep!!

I still have a Memorex CRW-1622 sitting on my bench along with a bunch of other old drives, it's either a 1x or 2x max for burning cdr's.
It still worked last time i tested it but that was probably a couple of years ago.
That baby burned literally 1000's of cdr's!!

Bought it in 1998, $200.00 with a $50.00 rebate for a total of $150.00 for that smokin' fast burnin' speed!!!!!

I remember when 233/266mhz was top of the line!!!

Bought a 120mhz from my buddie when he upgraded to the latest and greatest 233 or 266mhz and boy were we impressed!!

And my other buddie who back in the day put like 1000's of $ into a 66mhz for that smoking 64mb of RAMM and those whopping 500mb HDD's!!!

The guns don't work on lcd and plasma, and you're lucky that your particular projection set works. They're hit or miss with them. (see what I did there)
